hi everyone!

hello! i'm applying to vet school this cycle, and am curious about something...

are there any uc davis vet med students out there? i'm just curious, has anyone gotten in to davis with less than 3000 hours of hands-on animal experience? if so, what other activities/steller stats did you have that might have encouraged your admission? any info sharing would be nice! appreciate it much.

I got in with _much_ less than the average of 3000 hours of vet experience (I can't remember the exact numbers, but it was around 600 vet hours and slightly more of animal hours). But I did have a good variety of experiences - shelter, small animal clinic, zoo, wildlife center, emergency hospital, and brief externships at a ranch and dairy farm that was part of a study abroad course. I also had excellent grades and GRE scores. I was able to talk articulately about my experiences and show that I'd learned a lot from each of them, especially in the personal statement. Right around the time I submitted my application, I got my first job as a vet tech at this amazing emergency and specialist hospital, so I put it down but with 0 hours, then during my interview when they asked what I'd been up to since applying, it was the perfect opportunity to share how much more I'd learned. That probably impressed them, that I didn't stop everything just cos the apps were in.

Don't forget, the scary 3000 number is just an average. People who've been working as techs for years (especially full time) will have a huge advantage in numbers - even one year works out to about 50 X 40 = 2000. And that will pull the average upwards. As I didn't have quantity, I had to focus on describing the quality.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

thanks so much for your reply! i feel a bit at ease... there might still be a slight hope... ahaha.. anyhow i appreciate it much!!! 😀

If it helps, I was put on the waitlist at UC Davis with only about 2000 hours. My experiences came from different places too. Small animals, research, food animal, working at a mixed clinic. I think you have a fairly good chance of getting into UC Davis. :-D GOOD LUCK with your application!!!

My gpa was about a 3.5 at the time of application....(hehe it fell about .2 after applications O🙂) and I had about 1160 on gres with 740 in math and 420 in english and a 3.5 in writing.....( can you see my favorite subject 😛 ) I hope my stats make you feel better :-D So you don't even have to meet the average requirements to get an interview :-D GOOD LUCK!!!
