I will be starting vet school there this fall 🙂
When does that start? We start Sept. 23rd.Just joined SDN - woot woot! I'm going to be starting at Davis this August and wanted to get a thread going for all the incoming students. Looks like I found one here 🙂
Anyway, speaking of living situations, I'll be commuting from the Contra Costa area (have to coordinate with my soon to be husband who is a resident physician in Oakland but will be commuting to Stanford for Fellowship in 2014). Anyone else have a lengthier commute? Bonus if you live in my area and we can carpool!
So excited to meet you all!
I'm looking for a place in Davis (preferably west Davis), and I don't care if it's in an apartment, house, condo, whatever. In the end I can't be picky though, so who knows, I may end up being a commuter too Ablake 🙂
I had considered commuting from the Santa Cruz area, but one of the techs from my work did that (she did undergrad at Davis) and said it burned her out quick. Granted it's a 3 hour drive, assuming there's no traffic. 😛 Not sure how far it is from Oakland area...?
Wow! And I thought Pleasant Hill was far enough 😱
My commute will be about 45 mins each way so not TOO bad (great time to catch up on my podcasts!). Anyone thinking of moving to, or already living in, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Concord or Martinez - let's chat carpooling!
Also, anyone happen to know if we get free parking access as vet students? Or if there's a particular parking structure we're supposed to use?
Aaaaaand, in the interest of getting all my questions off my chest, anyone have insight into our supposed daily schedules? Heard someone mention classes should start at 8am and end around 2pm...?
We do not get free parking. There are multiple parking lots around the school and hospital, but a parking pass is ~$400 for the year.
$400, ouch! Is that for vet med only, or does it apply for undergrad students as well?

Just FYI, you will absolutely need to move closer when you start clinics. You're on call quite a bit, and you cannot live further than 15-20 minutes away. And 45 minutes is going to feel really terrible some days, especially when you factor in traffic.
Nothing is free at UC Davis. Nothing. Well, maybe the blows to the self esteem. They don't charge money for those, just part of your soul.
