Has anyone gotten a good start on housing? I am not looking forward to that process at all- and Irvine apartments are NOT cheap. Bleh.

I applied for on campus housing, but am also looking into off campus housing as well. Ideally, I would like to find a reasonable house to rent in the Newport area, as I would like to be as close to the beach as possible. So, if anyone is interested in living in that area together let me know.
Also, does anyone know how to get onto the electronic listings? Because if there are any students who live in that area already and need a roommate I want to find out.

From UCI housing website: "The Housing Office in 209 Administration maintains an electronic database of off-campus housing listings" which we can get by bringing our letter of acceptance to them. They recommend we actually come in to the office to get the most updated info; there is stuff for people seeking roommates, etc. It seems pretty necessary to travel to Irvine for a few days to go searching.
Close to the beach would be pretty awesome, wouldn't it?

Here's one source for you.

Look "off the water". They are close enough. On the water, besides being expensive, is too far out on the peninsula, where besides poor you will be unable to park near your house. Generally: I reccommend Google Earth-ing all housing options. I would not pay more than the rent on this site. Winter-only rentals are much cheaper.

Just got the revisit weekend email! I'm excited... but a little puzzled by the promise of a talent show on the schedule. hmmm.
Anyone planning on bringing someone with them? I hope to bring my SO if available.

So for housing all we had to do was send in a $20 check to activate that housing application we filled out at the interview, correct?

Also my financial aid status seems to never update even though I have sent in most of the required forms. Anyone else having luck with this?

About second look, not sure if I can make it. Work and such might keep me away.

Also where hell is everyone thats going to Irvine? Sure are not many people out there either stating they are going to Irvine or have been accepted.

The talent show will rock. What more could you ask for than an all-med student rock band to make you want to go to med school in the OC?

You mean... we might have a life in med school at UCI? 🙂

Greetings everyone! I just interviewed at Irvine a week ago and it absolutely blew me away. If I get in, I'll be going for sure... apparently they will accept 1/3 of the interviewees from my day. How long did it take you guys to hear? Anyhow, I'm hoping and praying I get in so I can join you guys on second look!

I heard exactly when they said I would. I don't remember any more how long that was, but not very long- two weeks? three weeks?

You have no idea. I'm an MS3 at UCISOM and my good buddy is applying right now and crusin' these boards, so he sent me the link to this thread so I could defend my band 🙂
You will have more time than you think no matter where you go as long as you manage it appropriately.
UCI is a great place, I love it. I'll be at Revisit Day, as will a bunch of MS1-2's, so ask everyone you meet what they do besides go to class/wards and see what they say. Then ask them about The Irvine Fever....

hey eric, i met you on interview day in late february. i was interviewing with brandon and he told me you had a band and stuff and if i remember correctly, you were riding your skateboard i think (i could be completely wrong, that's just what i remember). anyway, looking forward to hearing your band on second look weekend.

Hey Eric, hopefully you will come back to this thread. How does housing work? Do we just kinda sit on a waitlist and one day receive a call saying there is a place available do you want to take it? How do you find roommates? How much is the avg monthly rent?

Wow, I feel like a PreMed again, all up on SDN 🙂
Housing you can do 3 ways:
1) Get on waiting list for grad campus housing and wait. You should get a spot before school starts the rate things are going.
2) Apply for Vista del Campo (on campus but privately run and separate from waiting list housing). 1-3 year old places, washer/dryer, free internet, pool/spa. Cost a little more but worth it in my opinion.
3) Come down and look around for off-campus (Irvine near campus or on the beach in Newport).

For on campus it's like $500-650 for your own room depending on location and # bedrooms in the place. For Vista de Campo or VDC Norte it's around $700-900 and you can get a one-bedroom. More amenities. Off campus is around $1800-2000 for a 2 bedroom place across from campus. (Irvine Apartment Communities-The Monopoly. Google it).

I'd look into Vista del Campo. Google it.

Usually Gayle Pierce, the admissions director, keeps a roommate list going, so email her and ask her about it. [email protected]

Good Luck.

Oh I was under the impression that our housing application put us on the waitlist for Vista del Campo. So it does not?
We need to apply for housing at the two Vista del Campo places then?

Hey narc, you do need to apply independently to VdC to be considered for housing. I recommend doing this ASAP, as your chance of getting in drops precipitously later in the season. VdC is excellent (I'm an MSI and VdC resident), and I've got to say that its the best housing option on campus.
Congrats to everyone here... see you at second look! 👍

Can anyone give me details about housing options and transportation for an out of state med student who wants to do a one month elective at UC Irvine in Sept or Oct 2007? Can you live on campus housing for a month? Is it a walkable distance to the hospital and clinics? Can you get by without a car for a one month elective? Any advice on where to stay also appreciated!
Thanks

IVIG: the med center is not on campus. It is in Orange near "The Block" (big mall). Find housing near there (I have no idea what thats like, but its easier to find search for housing relative to the block than UCIMC, it a bigger selling point for most ;-)). It also may be easy to find public transport, since the Block is a big destination...unfortunately being SoCal the public transport isn't 24 hrs but the bus might run late/early.

Wow I'm also surprised this thread is so short. I'm sending in my application today for VdC.. is it worth applying for Norte? Seounds like a long waitlist. I guess I'll give housing a call to find out where to send my $20 check, I was also under the impression that the application we filled out during interview was for all housing campuses..

Seriously.. where are all the Class of 2011 anteaters on here? I figured this thread would be really active by now, like last year's.

Still waiting to hear back.. I interviewed on 3/21.. not sure whats taking so long. Anyone going to the second look weekend on Saturday? Whats the schedule like? I hope I can hear a decision soon so if I get in, I can go this weekend.

Yeah, c'mon, anteaters!
I'm going to the 2nd look this weekend- sounds pretty low key, just some faculty panels and presentations (finacial aid, etc) and stuff, plus the all-med-student band. It's most of the day Saturday.
Good luck for those of you still waiting to hear!

Please let us know how the second look goes! I wish I could go but I live quite far and didn't make plans early enough..

Ditto this. I just got in yesterday and it's too late for me to book a flight down to Irvine. 🙂 Thanks, everyone!

oh cool, I got in yesterday also! Good luck everyone!

is everyone looking at palo verde/verano or vdc/norte? Or off campus?

Future classmates and fellow Anteaters!! I am headed to the revisit day this Saturday for sure!! I am stoked..

About housing... I am waiting to see what ON campus housing I get, and if I dont get anything I will start seriously looking off campus...

I hope to see all of you guys there.... wootwoot:hardy:

I got in yesterday as well.. stoked:laugh:

I am looking at on campus housing but am interested in off campus stuff esp if it has a garage. I am a male and if there is anyone else out there thats interested in taking a look at whats off campus let me know. Just PM, I dont check this thread often.

When you filled out your housing application at the interview, you only applied for Verano and Palo Verde. Make sure you call the housing office to activate your application, b/c it' s not active until you do so.
I would recommend applying to both VdC and VdC Norte. If its anything like last year, they will give you a bunch of crap about it being full and waitlists and all that other garbage, but will then eventually let a bunch of people in. Just be persistent, call them every couple weeks to check up on your status, and generally bug them about letting you in. I don't know why it has to be such a hassle, but in the end I think it's worth it; VdC is by far the best on campus housing.

SanDiegoSOD.. I just emailed them 2 days ago (and sent a $20 check?).. thanks for letting me know about the situation at Vdc and VdC Norte.. I was a little scared off by the "we have a long waitlist" at Norte, just like you said. I'll send in that app this afternoon. $150 is like 4x my life savings, that's all..

$20... is that for an application fee? I was told they got rid of that this year, because its not actually legal... But it sucks that they make you send in a security deposit. Hopefully they don't actually cash the check until they offer you a spot.

I had to pay $150 each for VDC and VDCN. Thats a crap ton of money just to get on a waitlist.

Do any of these housing options have personal garages available? I am not interested in those massive underground garages everyone in the complex parks in. I was hopinh for a 1-2 car garage.

I was there yesterday and they said one of the on-campus graduate housings did. I believe they said it was palo verde...but it could have been the other.

Yep, application fee. I'd love to get the $20 back if I didn't need to pay it.

If I was to get an offer from Palo Verde or Verano first, should I decline and wait for the VdC and VdC Norte? Will that put my back at the end of the PV/V waitlist?

supposedly VdC doesn't have a waitlist yet, only Norte. My student host that stayed at VdC Norte parked on the street, as did his friend.

let's keep this alive!! it's the shortest Allo thread there is!! where is everyone else?

Had a closed 1-2 car garage for an apartment? That would be sweet. Is anyone looking for off campus housing. I wonder if you can get more for your money.

Hi everybody! I just checked out these apartments and they are not too bad for off campus housing. They are really close to campus.

http://www.parknewportapts.com/

They had several 1 bedrooms for about $1500 a month. Underground parking included. No washer and dryer in the unit but they have laundry facilities, dry cleaners, market, pools, tennis courts, etc... all on the property. It is a huge property that is a little older but they are nice.

I also checked out several of the properties by the Irvine Company. They basically own almost every major apt complex in Orange County. They are running about $1700-1900 for 1 bedrooms. They are much newer properties and have w/d in the unit.

http://www.irvinecompany.com/

Edit: All of these places offered better deals on the rent when you actually go there and check them out. The prices on the web site always seemed to be higher than what I was offered in person.

Jesus thats a lot of money. Please tell me it gets a lot cheaper with 2 bedrooms and 3 bdr apartments.
So what about houses nearby. I actually never looked around the area when i was down there but maybe there are 3-4 bdr houses for rent nearby. That would be pretty sweet to get one of those.

If you have roommates it will be quite a bit cheaper. I think a 2 bdr place would be around $2000 depending on how new/nice you want it. Newport Beach would probably have some better deals if you like living at the beach but I think parking can be an issue. I need at least underground parking if not a garage.

Another option is going to like Costa Mesa, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills or Laguna Niguel. These areas are cheaper. They are next to Irvine and you can get there quick off of the 73 toll road which never has traffic (although the toll is like a $1-2 each way I think).

I have been using http://www.ocrealestatefinder.com/ to look for places. It is the web site from the main newspaper in the area.

hello classmates, who was all at revisit day?? I was there and I thought it was pretty sweet. The faculty panel seemed approachable and sincere, and the students were all really happy... I left there stoked to attend... I was 'wooed'

lucky you...thats awesome. I still haven't heard back post interview (interviewed 3/21) and I wish I could have gone!

So what exactly was the day like? Was it like 8-5? Did you do anything in the evening?

It was from 11-4.. Starting off with a faculty panel consisting of 9 professors and 1 fin aid rep for an hour, then a brief studentt talent show, lunch with various tables with 'interest groups' set up, then a student panel of mixed years fora lil over an hour, icecream, then a demo of standardized patient interview, concluding with a raffel...

the panels were pretty much each individual on stage in the lecture hall, introducing themselves, giving their role at UCI SOM and why UCI SOM is great.. everyone that attended got a 'baggie' with a frizbie, stress cushions and a pen and pencil with UCI SOM on them...

if anyone else wants further details lemme know.. 👍

# of people who attended? Any forms we are supposed to have filled out? I think I turned everything in. Housing apps, financial aid, anything else? I havent paid any money to hold my spot, if and when do we need to do that?

Oh yea, when does school start? Orientation week?
