Good evening all. I am a UCBSO hopeful, and from my understanding, the only grades they use in calculating GPA's for admissions consideration are those from biology, o/chemistry, and physics. The thing is that my grades from my first two years were quite mixed; I was a very mediocre student. I have been doing quite well ever since the end of my second year, so my grades for all of the other prereqs listed on their website are good.

Can anyone recommend a course of action for me? Is my best bet to retake the BCP classes at a cc? I will be entering my fourth year of undergrad in the fall.

Thanks

I'm not sure what your question is? If your grades are okay, then I would work on having a lot of shadowing experience to make you less "mediocre."

My grades are okay now, but they weren't that great my first and second years. And from what I hear, those four prereq classes are the ones they use in calculating GPA, so they may not consider me even though my grades have significantly improved

Pm'ed you jpfmt. Best wishes!

UCBSO does Friday advising sessions - I recommend signing up for one of those! They will look over your transcripts and what not and talk to you about what you can do. I think it will reflect really well on you that your grades have improved a lot. Berkeley likes to advertise their range of GPA more than the average GPA, because students with some very low overall GPA's get in because of situations like yours. But I would definitely discuss it with them before paying to retake classes. Also, if you did well on those sections on the OAT, that's one way to prove that you can master that type of material (even if the OAT isn't as in-depth on the material as your university classes).

I'm starting at UCBSO this fall - so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Good luck!

I am also planning to apply to UCBSO, but I am a bit anxious about their immunology pre-req that they implemented after I graduated. Does anyone have suggestions about where I might be able to take this? I looked at all my local CC's, and none offer the equivalent course they are looking for.

Thanks!

I was recently admitted to berkeley and I will be starting my first semester this coming Fall. My GPA was a little bit below their average, but I believe my OAT score as well as my application made up for my lower GPA. It's definitely possible to get an interview offer or get accepted if you have a lower than average GPA but it's not easy, I felt very lucky and fortunate. If you didn't do good your first 2 years, I think thats normal, a lot of people don't do well there first year or 2 in college, including myself. When I was at UCSD I was struggling to maintain a 3.0 at first, I got a few C's and was I was really getting bummed and disappointed. It was a tough grind for me in the beginning but I was able to pick myself up and bring my GPA back up. As long as your showing improvement, schools will definitely see that, so thats really good. Your on the right track, just keep working hard! I don't think you have to retake some of your classes unless you have a lot of C's or lower in your science courses. But if your doing well now, then I wouldn't be too worried about retaking classes, it's up to you. You can talk to an admissions counselor to get an opinion.

As far as the immunology pre-req course. You can take it through UC Berkeley Extension Online. It's about $900. I heard there are some other colleges that offer this course online but I can't remember them though 😡

If you have any more questions or need some advice please don't hesitate to ask or PM me. I would be happy to help 🙂
