Anyone out there on the fence between UCI and another school??

I could sure use a spot at UCI; if you could go either way, heres a healthy nudge away from Irvine.

Help a brother out!! Perhaps there's a little $$$$ in it for you...

I'm sure I sound desperate (and I am), but I have it on pretty good word that if a spot clears at UCI, it should be mine. This is my second application cycle, and this UCI waitlist is my only hope. I'm a San Diego native and ready to hightail it to Irvine.

Pathetic, I know...

what if we withdrew last week? anything in it for us then?

Out of curiosity, did you just not apply to any of the 2nd tier schools that are less selective? UC-Irvine Medical is tier 1 and is pretty selective considering it's in the most competitive state for med school admissions. Also, would you just rather not apply for a 3rd application cycle? I'm sure there are less selective schools that you probably didn't apply to in the 2nd tier.

I definitely will apply a third time if I have to. The problem is, my MCAT score (38) is now expired, so I would have to retake it. It would take a lot of refreshing to repeat my score.

I applied to VCU as a "safety". So much for that, not even an interview...

looks like we're in the same boat : ) i had the same mcat score, but no love from uci 🙁 maybe i'll up the ante on your payoff......if enough people turn them down, they'd have to go through the ENTIRE waitlist, wouldn't they? i wonder if that ever happens...

Please don't listen to the poster above me and settle for a DO school. A 38 is a VERY IMPRESSIVE score and I have no clue how you were not admitted to at least 1 of the schools you applied to (unless you applied to only the top schools and only the UC med schools). But if you got a 38 the first time around, I'm sure you could pull off the same score again if you did the same amount of studying. Yes, this would require you to go back to your MCAT prep books and do those problem sets over again, read those passages over again, etc. However, I'm positive that there are 2nd tier med schools that you previously did not apply to that would love to take you. I know it's going to be hard, but if you got such a fantastic score the first time around, you can pull it off again! Never give up hope.

Re: A 38 is like being in the 94th or something percentile.

Actually, a 38 is 98.8-99.4%. So, it's a commendable score. TYY posted his story on a thread a while ago-- he had a marginal start and then a good gpa his last two years, but he only applied to 9 schools, a bunch of which were UCs and only one of which was a backup.

I'd just ask-- have you contacted UCI with a letter of love? Have you called the admissions office and expressed your interest or sent in a letter about what you've been up to lately?

Yes, I did call the UCI office to check my status and to express my interest.

I also sent a LOI when I was notified of being an alternate.

Do yall know if any schools are lenient (sp?) on MCAT dates? If they are, perhaps I could reapply this year without retaking the MCAT?? I took the MCAT in August of 2000, btw.

Hi TYY,

I know there are some schools that are longer for three years. Some even allow the score to last five years. One of my friends was in the same situation and literally called every single medical school to find out which would take it. Your score is sooooo great that I really think you should apply to these schools!!!!

TTY if your mcat was 38... what was your gpa??

and im just wondering like everyone else... how the hell did you NOT get into a med school, even if you only applied to cali schools.
isnt a 38, and a decent gpa (3.6+) a foot into almost all of the UC's??

unless you completely fumbled your interview or wrote a weird personal statement, i dont understand why -- nor how -- you managed to get rejected....

A 38 that is impressive, you must be pretty book smart. Too bad you didn't have enough common sense to apply to more schools. Just another case of being book smart, and no street smarts.

Dr. Xavier: Good job on putting the guy down when he's already freaked out that he might not get into any medical schools.

TYY: Please ignore Xavier's condescending advice and keep sending those letters of intent to UC-Irvine. However, the folks in this thread do have a point. If you do apply again for the entering class of 2005, make sure you apply to MORE than 9 schools and make sure you have plenty of back-up schools. Your MCAT score is great and although it is very hard to repeat the same MCAT score on two different sittings, I doubt you'll do far worse if you have to take it another time. Make sure you apply to many more schools in the 2nd tier as opposed to just the top tier schools and the UCs. The admissions to the UC med schools are really cutthroat, so make sure you apply to the private med schools in Cali.

I've heard of a case where med schools waive the three years MCAT deadline for a student because his MCAT score was so high. (UCSF I think). If it comes to reapplying, you may want to strike a deal with the med schools.

We all know what a crapshoot it is to get into med school, don't listen to people who tell you you should've gotten in.
