UCI vs. USC

Well I know both of these programs pretty well, as well as you can as a med student... the major differences are:

UCI is smaller and more closely knit although the type of people are pretty similar at both places USC it seemed like you can "fly under the radar" a bit more if you want... both places residents go out and have fun and have a life outside of work and a great call schedule.

UCI overall seems a bit more academic with more research opportunities and perhaps a bit more teaching overall but in general I think both programs are not necessarily excellent as far as teaching goes. Depends on the type of learner you are, but it is mostly self directed learning both places. Both have morning conferences but at USC the chairman is there everyday and they seem a bit more useful although overall not going to be enough to pass the boards or anything... either way you have to read at home. USC you have more autonomy for sure. USC also seems more private practice oriented based on the track record.

USC you are in the city... UCI you are in a suburban area with less to do although some consider OC to be "metropolitan" with "less stress" like they say in the UCI brochure. If you are young and single, USC will offer more IMO as well as more residents to hang with who all seemed very outgoing.

USC has the SRNA and CRNA issues mentioned in other threads. UCI just has CRNA's which help the call schedule and there are no problems with them noted as far as I know.

I think name wise both are equal but USC might carry more weight in the city of LA itself but both can get you great jobs in the general LA area.

I don't know, that's all off the top of my head.

I had heard that some big Peds Anesthesia guy from Yale was going to be chair at UCI? Anyone else know anything about this? If it's true, I would assume that it would be a good thing for UCI.

his name is Zeev Kain - he was the vice-chair at Yale and has done a bunch of research in pediatric anesthesiology, specifically in the psychological effects of surgery on little kiddos.

between his arrival and the opening of their new hospital next year, UCI could see some drastic improvements to their program in the near future
