Hi All,

I haven't seen much about UCLA this year so I have a couple of questions!

Has anyone decided on UCLA?

If you attended the Admitted Students Day today (March 19), could you please share your impressions/thoughts/anything you found interesting?

Thank you so much! Good luck to everyone with making school decisions

Hi there,

I have decided on UCLA - the MPH Epi program. The faculty that were present in our departmental meeting were great and are very well-rounded in regards to their research. There are definitely a lot of resources available to student in terms of funding opportunities through internships. They came out with a program recently called Bruin Walk which links students with alum which they can shadow during spring break. The alum program network seems very strong with a lot of potential connections to be made.

There was also mention of there many international program opportunities which I found interesting.

9:1 student to faculty ratio

Also if you're not aware, the school received a $50M donation recently from Dr. Fielding. 1/3 will go towards student scholarship opportunities, 1/3 to the classrooms/program development, and 1/3 to however the school chooses to utilize it. It is definitely a great time to be starting at UCLA this fall!

Let me know if you have any other specific inquiries and I'll do my best to answer them

Hello!

I will be attending UCLA in the Health Management track. I wasn't able to make it to Admitted Students' Day because I just found out about my acceptance shortly beforehand. Am really excited to start school. Can someone please tell me when is a good time to look for housing? I am currently living in the East Coast now and don't know when the influx will start.

Thanks!

That all sounds so great! Thank you so much for responding. I've been in contact with a couple of current students and they seem to really enjoy the program. I was told that only one person is in charge of posting internships/jobs, so often you are better off trying to talk to professors and local organizations since many things don't actually get posted to UCLA's site. Is this the sense that you got from Admitted Students' Day?

I really am interested in doing an internship but I heard the first year can get a little hectic with all of the core classes and other requirements. The second year is when you get to choose more elective classes so you can tailor your schedule a little better. Do you think you'll be working part-time or will you hold off on that?

Awesome! Are you planning on living in graduate housing or find an apartment outside the system? www.housing.ucla.edu and www.cho.ucla.edu/ will help with those respective choices. Also, craigslist of course but do a careful screening process

True, there is one person in charge of those funding opportunities - at UCLA her name is Cherie Francis. She would be a good resource to get a list of orgs you can pursue on your own. Additionally, each department has an SAO who can help you with this as well. There's also a career adviser (her name slips my mind right now) who helps with resumes, mock interviews, etc. A lot of professors offer their own internships, etc but from what I hear it's harder to get a position as a first year. If that is the case and you want to work, volunteer and get your foot through the door. (Current students recommended this in the student panel.)

I am a bit hesitant about working during my first year, however I am lucky to already have a position in a lab at UCLA (connected to the SPH) as I currently work full-time and will be able to pick my own hours. So I will likely be working part-time during my first year.

The ideal situation for the second year would be to get a position as a GSR (graduate student researcher) and have your tuition paid for. This doesn't happen often for first years from what I hear as there are positions that require prereqs which we acquire during our first year. (that's why volunteering is recommended if you can't find a paid job). What you do for your first year ranges, but I think almost all students will work full-time the summer between first and second.

Has anyone received any funding offers for UCLA yet?

Has anyone received official acceptance from UCLA's Graduate Division yet? I've only received unofficial acceptance from the department and am getting nervous as some of the schools' deadlines are approaching.

Are you talking about the fellowship offers? A staff estimates about 10-15% of students receive those

I received mine about 2 weeks ago and accepted already. Have you contacted them?

Yup. Has anyone been told they've been chosen to receive one yet?

I don't know who to contact as the Graduate Division's admission is decentralized. Should I contact the School? I don't know why it's taking so long..

Can anyone shed some light on graduate housing options and preferences? I like the location of Weyburn Terrace but cannot find the rates on the UCLA website.

someone asked on Admitted Student day and Ms. Francis said she was barely getting through them but it should be done by March 31

Yes, I would contact the school and they should connect you to the right place. In that original email it should also have this number for the Student Affairs Office: (310) 825-5524

Here are Weyburn rates: http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1004954

Wow, that is expensive! Three years ago it was less than $1000. Damn cost of living adjustment. Plus parking would be another $100 a month. =X Yikes. Is it worth living here? Or try to find an accommodation elsewhere?

I moved from Texas to LA so the convenience of Weyburn made the cost worth it. Add to that the location and being surrounded by fellow graduate students. It was worth it for me as I was completely new to the area.

I'm now 3 weeks out from when they forwarded my (unofficially accepted) application to the graduate school, and 4 weeks out from when I popped corks to celebrate the great funding opportunity they offered me. Should I be concerned?
I'm scared to ask the admissions office...sleeping dogs, and all.

I'm in the same boat. =( I want to make all these plans to move to LA, but I'm stuck because I have not received an official acceptance yet.

Just submitted my SIR =D Go Bruins!

Does anyone know how difficult it is to switch from one track to another? I have been accepted to HPM track but am thinking about switching to biostats.

I believe it's as simple as turning in a form

Has anyone in CHS heard about fellowships/scholarships yet?
