Hey guys!

I just graduated with a degree in Psychobiology from UCLA this past spring. I was planning on going to medical school, but because of my own lack of motivation during my first two years of college, I did miserably. I graduated with around a 2.6 GPA.

Of course, I am not looking to apply to medical school with that GPA. I am currently retaking some pre-requisites through UCLA Extension's Pre-Medical Certificate Program.

On UCLA's undergraduate site, however, I read that UCLA courses may NOT be repeated with UCLA Extension courses. I think that was only if you were an undergraduate wanting to retake a class, but would have to do so only through UCLA regular sessions. However, I am not completely sure... since I graduated from UCLA already and am retaking these classes again, they should also be calculated into my GPA, right? I am planning on going the DO route, so I know that AACOMAS replaces the most recent retaken class to calculate your GPA. I just want to make sure that the classes I am taking through UCLA Extension now will replace my undergrad pre-reqs that I took at UCLA as I've gotten good grades so far.

Please let me know! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

If they're the same courses as the one you took in undergrad then they should be replaced in your AACOMAS GPA.

The UCLA undergraduate Dean's office does not calculate your AACOMAS sGPA.

If you are taking an equivalent course and properly fill out the AACOMAS application, your grade should be replaced.

Got it! I think that's what I was mostly confused about. I guess Extension courses don't replace grades for you as an undergrad at UCLA, but they count towards your AACOMAS GPA. Makes more sense now.

Thanks so much!

Thanks so much! I think this is a lot clearer to me now. I forgot that the AACOMAS GPA is calculated differently than how UCLA's undergraduate GPA is typically calculated.

Hi @stardust379! I am in a very similar situation as you, graduated with a B.S. in Biology from UCLA this past Summer. Would love to connect with you as we both journey our post grad life into medical school acceptances!

Hi @LP529!

I would love to connect with you as well! What are your plans currently as a post-grad? Are you doing a post bacc or thinking about one?

Hi, I started typing my response but I figured I'd PM you instead. 🙂

In the same boat as you my fellow Bruins! Graduating officially officially at the end of this summer (I have 1 class left) with a 2.8-2.9 UCLA GPA. I still need to take the last 2 physics classes for the pre-reqs, so it'll help me a little, I might be able to hit 3.0, I'll do the math later. Looking into post-baccs/SMPs and the like as well

Hi @SurfWaxAmerica ! Hope you're able to hit that 3.0! Let me know how searching for post-baccs go!

Thanks guys! Will report back with what I find. Spent the last 2 weeks deciding on which new MCAT books to buy and looking for jobs. I've only looked at the AAMC's website for post baccs in California but nothing in detail yet.
