Does anybody know if UCLA is full or not. If not why are they interviewing for alternatives so early?

i interviewed there last week and they said that they're not full...they said they have about 20 spots left. this news surprised some of the people who were interviewing from the alternate list because they had originally received an email stating that they were being placed on the alternate list since the class was already full.

i'm not on the alternate list though...but a majority of the people interviewing with me was on the list...so i'm not really sure what's going on?!? 😕

Can you tell me exactly how many people were being interviewed and how many were on the alternate list? I am starting to lose my hopes for UCLA. Also, could it be that they place the candidates with lower qualifications on alternate list eventhough the school is not full yet.

they interviewed two groups that day...four in the morning (the one i was in) and four in the afternoon. i talked to a few of them and discovered that 2 from my group and 1 from the afternoon group was on the alternate list. there could have been more but i didn't get a chance to talk to everyone.

the 2 that i spoke to from my group had pretty good stats...they've done research, earned mostly 20-22's on the DAT and about 3.7 gpa (which are somewhat comparable to my own). one of them even told me after the interview that the faculty member who interviewed her didn't know why she was even placed on the alternate list. as for the other guy on the list..he had excellent stats too..the only deviation from the norm was that he had already graduated (from Berkeley) and took a year off before he applied. So, unless they didn't tell me the truth about their stats, it doesn't seem like LA is placing candidates with low stats on the alt list.

during the curriculum overview session, one of the candidates asked when alternates would hear from them and they said that alts will be notified after all the interviews have been conducted..which equates to the end of April. they said that there was a year where they took up to 20 alternates and another where they only took 6. they also said that alternates are on a point system where they rate you on the high, med, or low end (not sure how this works). then they said that alternates who were accepted by other schools should secure themselves a spot first just in case.

well i'm not so sure if all this clarifies things for you Mani99, if not confused you a bit. from the way things look...even pretty strong applicants were placed on the alt list so i really don't know how LA's selection system works.

p.s. don't lose hope! btw, is LA your first choice?

Yes, it is my first choice. Thanks for clarification. I hope you hear from them soon.

Amicakes,
Would you mind telling me if you have alot of community service or work experience or anything that might have helped you stand out. Because I think UCLA probabley interivews high stat applicants only but maybe other stuff make each applicant better than the others with same stats.

Thanks Mani99.

well, i've worked part-time at a private practice for three years...just working the front desk and helping out the RDAs. I think the big thing that probably did it for me is that I've had some pretty good research experience: conducted my own study, first author of an abstract which I presented at a national conference, and the manuscript for my study is currently under review for publication. I have a few recognitions/awards...but that's about it.

From what the students there have told me is that sometimes it's just by luck..where some people with high stats are rejected and others with mediocre or even poor stats are accepted just because they have a certain quality/character that the adcom think will somehow contribute/benefit/bring in something new to the incoming class (which they view as a family since you're with the same people through all four years).

BTW, have you interviewed there yet?

No, but my stats are pretty high too and I have done research and have worked part-time all through college. But nothing like yours, publishing,.... I have seen some other applicants got accepted to UCLA who have published a paper or so. That could be what they are looking for. from what they said, my application will be reviewed soon, so I am hoping to get an interview soon but hopefully not for the alt list.

amicakes... were you at ucla with me jan 21 in the am?....
