i know there has been some posts about this similar topic but i heard on the interview trail that PD from UCSF told his medical student that UCLA harbor has a better reputation than UCSD in california...

i goto med school in east coast so my PD does not know about UCLA harbor...

is it true that in california, UCLA harbor has a great reputation, one that rivals UCSD? would it be considered in higher regards than UC irvine (in terms of fellowship placement)?

that sounds like extra, extra gossip . . .

Harbor actually has a nice reputation nationally, but don't kid yourself . . .

Do you have a personal preference for LA or SD? Have you interviewed at either of these programs?

If I told you that 50% of your fellowship interview invites was dumb luck and 50% was how productive you were in residency....would that allow you to stop worrying about reputation and actually go to the program that you liked the best?

Yeah, but people in more reputable programs seem to have far more "dumb luck."

Yeah, but people who are more productive in residency seem to have far more invites...so what's your point? You can out hustle somebody from a more reputable program. 50/50 son.👍

Back before any of you knew what residency was, Harbor was one of the top 10 medicine programs in the country. It is no longer top 10, but it's still very highly regarded and on par with UCSD.

Really? Up there with UCSF, BWH, hopkins, MGH, Penn, Duke, etc etc etc?

...what happened?

Yeah Harbor and Cook county had huge reputations, along with Parkland and Bentaub...the county hospitals often outshone their University affiliates because they were known for great clinical training. Seems like the whole "evidence based medicine" push has diminished the reputation of these programs...there is less research coming out of county programs (because the University affiliate gets the research dollars) and a strong clinical program doesn't get the prestige that a strong academic program gets.
