did anyone get the 2-year guaranteed housing contract???

If you check the ucla 2007 thread, you'll see that several people were given guaranteed housing.

the grad housing is known to be pretty horrible at UCLA. They're all relatively new (~3 years) but they tend to have lots of random problems due to the fact that they were built really fast (AND they're expensive). I know that some people might not have the option of looking for apartments in the area, but I highly suggest it.

i've heard both good and bad things, but you make it sound so horrible. did you live there yourself? where else can you find your own room in westwood for $1000 (utilities included)? thanks

maybe my initial description was a little too harsh. It's not that the grad housing is a total dump, but it is on the expensive side for what you get (and problems you might run into + slow turnaround for repairs). However, it is a convenient option for those that don't have the opportunity to look for apartments (coming from out of town). So in the end, I would suggest living there for the first year while you adjust, and then finding an apartment on your own after that. And yes, you can definitely get your own room + utilities for $1000.

...slow turnaround for repairs...

Based on my experience:
You should call them 2-3 times to make sure someone comes immediately. Otherwise, they feel it's not emergency and repair is usually done within 24 hrs. They always leave a feedback form and say what time/date/etc they came and what was fixed....
