Heyy Bruins,

So I just wanted to make sure. This is the general requirements for UCLA dental (and I am assuming similar to other schools)

Inorganic/General Chemistry 8 12
Organic Chemistry 6 8

For General Chemistry, it says you need 12 hours of quarter units (so 3 classes). But the chemistry 20 series is only 20A and 20B, does that mean that it's enough?

Similarly, with OCHEM. UCLA dental told me chem 30C is not required, but i was just wondering if its the same for other schools.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

I don't know about the 20/30 series, but the 14 series has 14A, 14B, and 14BL amounting to 11 units, even though most schools ask for 12 units (including UCLA Dental itself).

I talked to the people in the Career Center and they said that the program has been around for years and only amounts to 11 units, and all dental schools are aware that 11 units are the max for Gen Chem at UCLA, not 12.

I'm sure if you take all the 20/30 series, you'll be fine.

I have been looking into this ever since I switched out of my physical science major, and I found that different dental schools require differing levels of completion of the 20/30 series. To be safe, I suggest finishing the entire series, which is what I did. 20A, 20B, 20L, 30A, 30AL, 30B, 30BL, 30C, 30CL

I think as long as you take 20a, 20b, 20L, you should be fine 🙂
All my friends went to dental schools without any problem.
Also, 20 or 14 series doesn't really matter ..so I wouldn't worry too much!

Hmmm.. Yeah, I am starting to get worried too, since I followed the 14 series. Should be fine, right? If it would be a problem then interviewers would mention it anyways 😛

Good luck to all fellow bruins.

these are all the chem classes i have taken at ucla: 14A, 14B, 14C, 14D, 14BL, 14CL, 153L. never ran into problems.

ooh. ucladds, i dont know if i can do that because i already graduated. how did u find out about that information?

any other bruins in similar situation?

hiii, sorry for reviving an old thread, but UCLAbruinz, did you ever find out if 30cl was required for dental school?? please say it's not lol

yayyyy, you just made my day lol 🙂 i switched out of biochem, but i still had to finish the 20/30 series. and yep, bacher still holds the monopoly on 30bl&cl labs lol.

haha bacher.. that stabbing in a chem lab last year happened in one of his ochem lab classes. horrible professor

wow, crazy. I didn't even hear about this. Best of luck to your friend, hope they're doing well!

And GL to all the bruins out there on sdn! 🙂😉

I asked this question specifically to a counselor at UCLA dental school. She said that as long as you finish the 14 series, it counts. Basically, the 14A, 14B, 14BL accounts for only 11 units but it will count for 1 year of GChem. It's weird cuz the wording on the pre-reqs said there are no exceptions to the amount of units... I guess there are exceptions.

haha so what is the verdict for the 20 series bruins?

we only need to take chem 20a,b, 20l, 30a,b, 30bl? can anyone confirm this?

please say so. haha i dont know if we really need to take 30c and 30 cl because every school i called doesnt really know... because the ppl i talk to arent admission counselors but more likely just assistants. i went ahead and applied though.

btw yea i heard about the stabbing. that is crazy. oh ucla... i heard the week before there was a frat house fight as well no?

dude, i thought there was ANOTHER stabbing when I skimmed this thread. yea, I remember exactly where I was when I first heard it happened. The offender was crazy and I do no approve, but as a UCLA lab associate, I understand.

I emailed a counselor about the 30CL requirements and this is what she said:

Not all schools have the same requirements, but I am copying a segment of my correspondence with USC Admissions Committee from 2006.

I discussed this with the rest of the USC School of Dentistry, Admissions
Committee members and we decided that UCLA students must complete the
entire 20/30 sequence including 30C and 30CL regardless of their major.
In addition, they must complete Biochemistry 153A & 153L.

BOO, so I guess we do have to take it for some schools...like USC. 👎

FUUUUUUU
so do we have to take biochem lab as well? (153L) or is that requirement just for SC???? for other schools i didnt see the biochem lab requirement.. i think most said a quarter of biochem....

oooh, i think just taking biochem 153A should be fine then unless ur applying to usc. 🙂

but yea, the counselor advised taking 30CL to be on the safe side. but friiiick, i REALLY dont wanna.

i think its only USC who specifically requires that. i called them and they said the exact same thing.

However, UCLA and USCF are okay with stopping at 30Bl... i dont know.. this isn't fair.. we're taking harder and more classes than the 14 series as well. urg dont know about other school though. as for 153L, i think USC is one of the few schools who wants a lab so ur okay minoh.

anyone else know?

yeaa im one of those majority who ended up with 14s. were you biochem or something? why did you take the 30 series?
