UCLA va. LLU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is no way in hell I would choose LLU over UCLA. I mean, that is probably too much traffic to take the 10 to school every day, but who doesn't want to live in west hollywood?

someone who's lived with like 4-5 people in a 2 br apt and 3 ppl in a 1 br apt.

You forgot to mention that you also pay nearly 600 a month for that

Im surprised no ones brought up the lifestyle requirements at LLU. If that isn't your thing, I would seriously consider UCLA.

That's the thing...you can't put the big name aside lol

In my honest opinion (putting UCLA's "big name" aside), I would choose LLU over UCLA. I understand people may immediately question you for even considering making such a decision, but let me explain why from my experiences volunteering at both schools. From being exposed to both environments rather extensively, being at LLU just made me happier than being at UCLA, particularly because the faculty are generally nicer and more encouraging at LLU. In addition, the clinical experience offered at LLU is second to none! If you're considering location, LA and Loma Linda are pretty different, each with their own pros and cons. (Side note: LLU has a beautiful campus!)

LLU is an extremely respected dental school, and if living at home is very important to you, then you can't go wrong picking LLU. Good luck with your decision!

EVERY faculty member I've met at UCLA so far is super nice and encouraging, not to mention nationally renowned leaders in their fields.

There's a joke told by students at Hunter College in Manhattan that they attend UCLA... University on the Corner of Lexington Avenue lol.

Btw, pick UCLA. You have to be out of your mind to attend LLU and be confined to the lifestyle of Seventh Day Adventists. You'll probably get hanged if found with a bottle of beer in your pad. Thanks, but no thanks.

eh. Clinical training at UCLA, a well-known public school with cheaper tuition for CA resident (ya, the OP is CA resident), is worse than LLU? Are you sure? 😕

LLU has a reputation for producing great clinicians. I have friends at UCLA who say we're a better clinical school. As far as the "lifestyle requirements" that people like to make a big deal about, take it from a non-sda student: they are quite easy to live with.

However, if you have a chance to go to UCLA as a CA resident and save a bunch on tuition, I would do it.

UCLA isn't exactly known for its clinical training

Yeah, I would say it depends on what you want to do. Both schools are great (from what I hear of UCLA and KNOW of LLU) so do you want to specialize (easier said than done, A LOT easier said than done) or do you want to go into general practice. If you want to do general, I say go to LLU...but if you want to specialize I've heard UCLA gets people into residencies all over the country. So yeah, it all depends on what you want.

UCLA has a better name then Loma Linda, period. Unless you are a fundamentalist christian and you want that to be your network after school, UCLA wins in every category. Best of all, it's cheaper.

Just so you know, here is a recent topic being debated by seventh day adventists:

I don't really feel comfortable with an institution that has not accepted evolution and advocating a young Earth and a great flood teaching me a biomedical curriculum.

To be fair, all Christian denominations support creationism and flood...ism

And many hospitals in the US come from a Christian background...doesn't necessarily mean anything

I'm at a catholic medical center and other than a prayer on the PA system at 7am, the crosses everywhere it has not mattered one bit

Anyway

I find these comments to be rather intolerant and ignorant.

Loma Linda, like any other dental school, must be accredited. In order to do so, they must have a certain curriculum and the students must pass National Boards. You can't pass national boards (at least part I) without a strong foundation in sciences. Creationism is NOT part of the curriculum. Evolution is not denied, but it doesn't need to be a big part of the conversation in dental school. You should already have gotten most of your exposure to it in undergrad when doing your prereqs.

I love how people who don't go to LLU can somehow be such experts on the topic.

I never said anything about one school being worse than the other. I was sharing my own personal opinion from my experiences. I definitely agree that if money is a deciding factor, then going with the cheaper school is a safe bet, especially since LLU and UCLA are two great options to have.

And to lemoncurry's last post -- 👍

Loma Linda regulates the legal conduct you do inside your own bedroom and your own house. I know of no other dental school that does this in the country. Marquette doesnt do this and they are a Catholic University. Sure other schools have rules about conduct and if you break any laws, but nobody goes this far. Sounds pretty fundamentalist to me.

Timpson -- Every student that attends LLU is perfectly aware of what they expect or require, so what is the purpose of your posts? If it's not the school for you then why don't you leave it at that? They have a superb dental school and that is what matters most to the students who choose to attend.

Last time I checked, there was no LLU faculty stationed in my house to monitor my activities.

Let's put it this way, for some time UCLA was ranked as the number one dental school in the US by dental professionals who ranked them. Who would not go there?!
