  1. Pre-Dental
I know all three schools are excellent academically. They always have great board scores and all 3 receive alot of many in research funds. However, I'm not very familiar with everything else. Living costs? ability to find housing? hot girls? ugly girls? ability to find patients? Are the facilities top notch? or are they old as hell? Teachers are friendly? Students help each other out? Or is it very competitive? How's the city for a single, young 20's student? Please share the wealth on any information that you have, even if it seems completely ridiculous, gracias.

Let me break it down for you, and the rest of the SDN'ers who have never traveled. As for weather that is personal preference. Los Angeles is indeed warmer, but it is smoggy and a lot of pollution. Seattle plain old sucks during the winter, unless you like constant rain and 50's. San Francisco isn't mickey mouse beaches and sunshine, but if you go in to the north east bay (Berkeley, Oakland, Piedmont) it is a fair bit warmer.

So for weather, that is personal preference. LA will edge out Seattle, simply because Seattle is small ( (a lot of people, but they are boooooring suburbs full of urban sprawl, franchise restaurants, and strip malls) and the wealth of things to do in Los Angeles, even though it sucks as a town. As for the other stuff, you're welcome, and here you go:

Hot girls: UCLA > UCSF > UW

Research: UCSF > UCLA > UW

Cost of living (expensive to cheapest): UCSF = UCLA > UW

Great City: UCSF >>> UCLA >> UW

(this is unless you're one of those fools that actually likes Los Angeles and how "awesome" it is. If this is the case, then all bets are off..)

.

Hot girls comparison is more like this:

UCLA >>>>>>>>>>>>> UCSF > UW

Hot girls comparison is more like this:

Point taken. I would say it is more like this:

UCLA >> UCSF >> UW

However if you want intelligent girls (i.e. NOT VAPID) then it's this:

UCSF ~= UW >> UCLA

These comparisions are all speaking on general terms, of course.

who wants an intelligent girl??😕

we all know the best girlfriends are not the brightest! 😍 😉

Los Angeles: (example 1) (example 2) (example 3) (example 4 -diff'nt thread) (all too true...)

Seattle: (example 1)

San Francisco: (example 1) (this guy has mostly bogus reasons, but included this san francisco link to be fair)

Here is the link to the entire thread, if you want to check it out what people have to say about different cities. Detroit ranks rather high as well as Newark

hope it helps

LA is definitely the best place for chicks. My classmates are hot.

Yeah, but are you hooking up with any of them? (or meeting hot UCLA sophomores and telling them you're in dental school? 😎 😎 )

yes.... stay away from seattle.... everyone..... stay away.

Academics + Research:
UW = UCSF > UCLA

Hot Men:
UW(scruffy-hotness) > UCSF(sophisticated) > UCLA(too metro for my taste)

Hot Women:
UCLA > UW > UCSF(hippie-ish)

Ease of meeting other singles:
UCSF > UCLA=UW

Night life (loud music, crowds...bells and whistles):
UCLA > UCSF > UW

Bars To relax at (think Grey's anatomy):
UW > UCSF >UCLA

Places to study:
UW > UCSF > UCLA

Expenses:
UW=UCSF > UCLA

Weather:
UCSF > UCLA=UW

...i base these observations on the fact that i have lived in all three of the cities in which these schools are located.

hmmm. i think it's all arbitrary. i see so many HFFA's (hot from far away). i usually see hot ones at the start of fall quarter. then i saw them again in spring. maybe for me, hot correlates with how much clothes they don't have on.

I think LA is a good city. People seem to like SF better though. The thing you'll dislike about LA is the traffic, ruthless drivers, and high cost of living. In terms of girls, I can't say for sure because I haven't gone to UCSF nor UW. Still, there are hot girls all over the world so I don't think that should be an issue. Westwood is a great area, but if you get sick of Westwood, you can always go to Koreatown, Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade, Venice Beach, etc. Plus, there are so many restaurants you can go to in LA. In terms of research, I agree with denteng. I have heard that UCLA dental students have to continue another year for clinical. Plus, for clinical rotations, you have to go to Harbor City or Venice. Drive to Harbor City can take you anywhere from 25 minutes to 1.5 hours. Drive to the Venice hospital should take about 20 to 30+ minutes. It all depends on traffic. UCLA professors are supposedly really tough on their students. The facilities are outdated compared to a school I recently interviewed at. Hope I contributed something.

You .

You are so misinformed it seems laughable that you call yourself a predent.

wth? i'm at ucla right now and i'm researching for one of the professors there. he's a total j@cka$$ despite my hard efforts and perfect results. i've noticed the pattern with almost all the dental professors there. i have to agree with dentalboarder. want to explain yourself instead of just being a punka$$? seems to me he described la as a city pretty well.

No no. He's right. I just read other posts by UCLA students that their clinical program is great. I was misinformed, and for this, I apologize.

...UCLA professors are supposedly really tough on their students...

UCLA professors spend so much time for their students. For example, our gross anatomy professors probably spend 80+ hrs outside class to help students learn. I am not sure if they ever sleep. They give us a ton of great handouts, diagrams, figures, lecture notes,...It's unbelievable. They are gr8.

what about the patient pool? I have heard that ucla students have a hard time finding patients since it's in westwood. Can anyone share some thoughts/knowledge about this?
I am applying this year and UCLA is like my first choice. However I recently went on an interview somewhere else, and I heard so much bad stuff about ucla from this school. people there say that the ucla profs yell at students all the time. Can any ucla student clarify this?

No matter what UCLA is still my first choice and I say so because of its great program 🙂. If I ever get an interview there I am sure i'll be jumping up and down for a whole day.

I guess I'll put my two cents in. I haven't lived in either SF or LA to comment on them, but Seattle and the Pacific North West is the best kept secret in the US.

We dont have the beach access of SF and LA, but the ocean is about 2hrs drive. Put on a thick wet suite, head out to westport, and it's like you're surfing in Hawaii (minus being able to feel your toes). If you're an out-doorsy type than Seattle is your playground. The Skiing in the cascades is sick, just dont go heli-skiing and get stuck with a group of people with only so many objects for your survival😉😉 As far as location goes I dont think you can top UW. All the rain talk is just a cover-up to keep all the celebs out.

I am a 1st yr student. 3rd and 4th yr students have told me that they have plenty patients.

UCLA is really a good place especially if you are thinking of specializing and the weather is quite mild. I'm still wearing shorts! 🙂

Uh, no it's not. I'm just kidding. PNW is awesome, but the winter does take some learning even if you're from a cold place. If you are from a warm place, even more so. With the PNW, you just have to learn to broaden your ourdoors horizons, and if you do, you'll be rewarded! Now Portland is a well kept secret...Seattle is a more metroplitan feeling type of city/downtown. Portland is similar, but a little more granola/hometown type of feel like Seattle was 10-15 years ago. Either way, a great place to do your 4 years, and maybe make a home.🙂 Better than LA...definitely. Better than SF...debateable. Don't forget about PDX in all the hype!😉

PacNW is the place to be, I'll be sad if I have to leave for any real length of time 🙁

How could I not post in a thread with UW in the title?

Here's the real deal:

Patients: Anyone who says there's not enough patients because we're in Westwood has no logic. Patients come from all over LA to go to our clinic! Some even travel 3+ hours! I have no patients who actually live in Westwood. Everyone drives in LA. I have more patients than I can treat. 70% of them have complex dental needs. Simple as that.

Weather: It's subjective. Do you like sun, fog, or rain? There's no smog on the westside so don't try to pull that!

Faculty: I absolutely love ALL of our faculty. The clinical faculty in particular are the greatest. They are committed educators. Didactic faculty are a mixed bag. Some are skilled teachers, others are skilled researchers. All of them are genuinely nice, decent people. I think you'll find this is the case at every school.

Girls: I think this is silly. There are attractive people in every major city.

There is no other dental school I would have rather gone to. But it's a personal choice. No school will be right for every student. For me UCLA was the ideal school because it provides an excellent didactic and clinic education, is in LA, close to family, and will help me specialize.

Did you live in a project in LA?
