This quesions is for UCONN students:

I am attending UCONN next year and wanted to know what programs/opportunities there are for students to help underserved members of the community.

Thanks

Hi there and welcome to UConn! I can tell you about one such activity. Each week we have a group of students and a faculty member visit a homeless shelter in Hartford. We do oral exams, take health histories, give referrals. It's a great way to help and it's really good for getting the first and second year students started with seeing patients.

Lemme know if you have any questions. We'd be delighted if you signed up to help next year!

tieger18 & MsPurtell,

I noticed in a previous post that opportunities exist for 1st year students to get clinical experience from satellite work in underserved areas, mobile clinics, etc etc:

Just trying to keep this thread alive.

For all ya incoming students next year, are there any of you wanna have a head start on volunteer work? I am co-ordinating the Migrant Farmworks Dental Clinic and if you guys are interested, you guys can email me to [email protected] and i will schedule you guys for the summer if you will be here. If not, i will make annoucements in your class after school begins cuz this project last till october.
What we do for migrant farmworkers is that we go on different fields and provide dental health care to them. We exam them, make diagnosis and refer them to a dental clinic for free treatments. This will be a great experience for you and it also looks good on your resume!! well, let me know.... this year i have a large number of students who signed up for this activity so each students might have a chance to go once or twice this year. OKIE... contact me if you are interested and see you guys soon.

I will definitely get involved with such programs and hope to keep up with all of the great activities that will be offered. I'm psyched about classes and can't wait to get to tackle the first two years out of the way!!

... ummm, i wish i could go on about our future alma mater and dentistry, but now it's time for something more important... Class of 2009-- It's time to jam!!

I am a fourth year at UCONN. Our community outreach program includes community health centers around the area. They include New Britain, Hartford, East Hartford, and Norwich so far. The class above us spent 8 days there, we spent 16, the class below us will spend 30 I believe. Its more like a private practice setting. You see 4-6 patients a day and some places have your own assistants.

As for other community programs we do. We goto a homeless shelter, we participate in special olympics, we goto see migrant farmworkers, and we goto elementary schools and give oral hygiene instructions.

We also go to underserved countries and do extractions and OHI. Trips currently are going to Haiti, Belize, and Peru.

I hope this helps, if you have any more questions just ask, I'd be glad to help.
