Hey all you going to UConn,
I have heard awesome things about the school, the dental program, etc., and would love to be a Husky. However, I am concerned because I am not a New England state resident, let alone a Conneticut resident. Is it possible to get in without being state/New England resident? What kind of scores does an out of stater need to have? Also, what else is UConn big on?....maturity, research, extracurricular, etc. For those of you who got in do you mind posting your stats, how the UConn interview is and any other info. that would be beneficial to those of us trying to join the Husky ranks.

you totally can get in as a non New England applicant. I am a Michigan resident and I am going to Uconn next fall! I think the biggest thing in applying to any dental school is applying early, as in getting your stuff in ASAP.
I also think research is important, at my interview they seemed really interested in that. They also like experience in a dental office...but really one thing they really found amusing was the fact I was involved in non-science activities.I guess they like people who seem 'well rounded.'
As for GPA and DAT scores, check out the thread entitled "For those headed to UConn" some current UConn dental students posted the average scores of the entering class. Good Luck! 🙂

Can you get in to UConn as an out of state (even WAY out of state) applicant? I would say I am rather an expert on that subject...hailing from TENNESSEE (!) of all places, who would think I had a chance? I sure didn't. AND, to add to this absolute nonsense, I am a THIRD year student! Ha! Getting in seemed, well, laughable. But, here I am, studying up on my Boston accent, ready to go.

It is entirely possible for you to get in out of state, but, of course, that's where the good news stops. It doesnt make it EASY for you that you arent from ol' New England. They are, of course, a state school and will discriminate as they see fit against us "outsiders". But, don't dispair, it is possible (once again, here I sit).

Your scores have to be very good. Ditto on checking the other thread for incoming class scores, but, they dont break it down for you on out of state students....as for me, I had a 3.75 overall/3.68 science GPA, 21/17 DAT scores, had done research in chemistry, and had been involved extensively in extra-curr. stuff. I also must have done decently at the interview, which is pretty tough (although it helped that the guy interviewing me had also gone into dental school after 3 years in his day). They will grill you in that interview on any of your possible weaknesses, so be ready.

Definitely apply, though...it cant hurt to try; they are one of the best in the country. You can always hope, too, that they might look at you as adding to a "diverse" student body. Inasmuch as this may make you feel like some sort of rare animal they throw in there just to "spice things up", it certainly can't hurt!

I got in as a Oregon resident, I'm not sure you can get too much farther from New England, except maybe So. CA. In contrast to the other people, I thought my interview at UConn was what got me in. My tip for any interview is get the interviewer(s) to talk about themselves as much as possible. I have done some research, but very little by way of ex. curr. My stats are 3.33 20/20, so nothing really spectacular. Like Jon said, I think I got in as a side-show admit, but as long as I'm there, that's all that matters in the end! I felt that they really go out of their way to get more out of state residents than most state schools. They practically advertise their 'in-state tuition after the first year' as a selling point . I applied to mostly state schools, and UConn was the only school to give me the time of day. I think you have a better chance at UConn than many other state schools. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the input....makes the light at the end of the tunnel seem a little brighter. I will definitely apply to UConn. Hope to maybe see you guys there in a couple years.
