Hey--anyone know anything about UConn? I gotta decide soon to go to it or cancel....
am not sure how helpful this will be (I don't have my notes in front), but here are some things i remember:
Residents are indeed very happy. The program is small-to-moderate in size and the teaching seemed to be better than average. they cover mostly 2 hospitals (hartford and Uconn), with Uconn being private, nice and cozy, and Hartford is your typical City hospital. The call is front-loaded (i don't remember whether the seniors take the call from home, but I believe they do in their 4th year. Also, I am not sure whether there is a buddy system for the first few calls, but i think they do have it, at least for the first call). They are very good in Neuromuscular stuff (one of the doctors, Dr. Kevin smth, don't remeber last name) is very well known. They also seem better than average in Vascular neuro, although I wasn't particularly thrilled by their program. they were better than Yale in that field though. One of the big positives, they guarantee a prelim year if you match with them, and prelim year there is fairly nice, 4 months of elective w/no call during these months. Also some residents were saying that ICU call is Q4 (some were saying it's Q3; if it's Q4 it's a great benefit IMHO, `cause most programs it's Q3 and on occasion Q2).
Negatives: location, especially Hartford Hospital. I was staying with my friends so i went through the city rather than take their directions: let's just say that on my way, if i was intrerested, i could have scored some drugs at least 3 times. Most people don't leave in that neighborhood so i guess it might not be a problem
🙂. On the other hand, Ct is fairly cheap to own your own condo/house, in comparison to Boston or NY.
The interview itself is good. They have one Dr. F something, who if present might pimp you. Finally, at the end of the session you'll have, what I call a "BULL S***" session, where you meet w/Dr. Reik and he gives you the faculty impression of you, supposively. However, everybody w/whom I interviewed and several other people I've met on the trail heard the same thing: "Our faculty really liked you and we would love to have you here. We will rank you in the top 1/3 w/the exact # unknown b/c we still have to interview other people." I know that math is not the strongest suit of many doctors, but statistically it's impossible for everyone to be in the top 1/3, if you know what i mean
🙂 Anyway, that's why i think it's a bunch of BS, especially since w/in a week you'll get a letter from Dr. Reik repeating how much they like you. Once again, everyone I interviewed with and met later on the trail got the same letter.
Overall, average-to-good program. COnsider if married and want to settle down, IMHO. I won't be ranking it in my top 5
