Has anyone applied or looked at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine? I hear its a good school. I saw on their website that they accept people with MCAT scores between 20 and 40 is that true? Does anyone know anything else about the school? Im from Connecticut and it seems like a good option being that instate cost is really low. Thanks!! 😳

Yes they say that is their range but you have to take the whole URM thing into consideration as well. It is a good school but it is also a very small school (only about 80 per class). Being the only state school in CT, it is tough to gain admission. I am from CT too and I applied there as well due ot the in state tuition factor. Good luck.

Odd.

I seem to run into a lot of people going to school in Virginia that are from CT. 😕

Do they set aside a certain number of seats for out of state/international applicants?

Yeah me too - I did my undergrad years in VA and I've met a lot of people from CT, NY, NJ, and PA here - a lot more than I expected at least.

I'm not sure...Since I am in-state, I never really looked into that at UConn.

From what I understand, they have a mandate from the state to be 70% in-state students.

why only 80 seats ? Thats weak sauce ..

Wow. I'm an out of stater applying and I'll be interviewing there next Friday. I guess competition is going to be pretty tight, if 70% of 80 are instaters, that means only 24 seats for us outside of Connecticut. I'm happy for the opportunity to see Hartford, is it a pretty town?

If the numbers hold true, you're actually competing for fewer spots than that. I'm an in-stater, though my stats aren't great, so I'm sweating here waiting for an interview. As for Hartford...well, I grew up across the river, and let's just say...you can definitely make your own good time there. The bar scene is ok, nothing spectacular...although the riverfront is in the midst of an enormous renovation project that is supposed to revitalize the city with shops, bars, hotels, etc. We'll see. There are some bars/pubs that have kept me entertained over the years, but there are certainly others I dislike, and there's a very limited range of activity at night. Some areas are downright BAD, but that's to be expected. Anyway, if you're used to a NYC, Boston, Philly type atmosphere...forget about it. Great public school though...wish there were more seats in each class!

I grew up in West Hartford and Avon - both are suburbs of Hartford and neighbor Farmington (where UConn med school is located). If you can, make your way to West Hartford Center - obviously in West Hartford. Great shopping, atmosphere, and restaurants. You really don't want to miss it. Hartford is a nice city for its size, just don't go to the North End - it is the dangerous area of the city. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck.

You are welcome to PM me if you have any questions about UCONN.

There are about 80 medical students and 40 dental students in each class. Medical and dental students take the same core curriculum for the first two years.

Although my class has many people who are from Connecticut there are also people from Alaska, Utah, Toronto, Philly, Arizona, etc. If you have an interview... there must be something they like about you! Don't worry about the competition and enjoy the interview day. It is low stress and a good opportunity to talk with students to get a feel for the school.

Do they only interview up to February? How are interview invites given?

Agreed, I should have pointed that out. While Hartford isn't the most spectacular place, the suburbs on the west side of the river are beautiful. Since UCONN happens to be in one of those suburbs, there are many more options than just Hartford itself.
