It has been said in the press release that UCR medical school is planning to open in 2013.

What is not clear is that when they will actually take applications..

Since they are planning to "open" fall of 2013, does that mean they will start to take applications this coming cycle June, 2012?

If they are planning on opening for Fall 2013 it means you would apply June 2012. The same thing was said last year when the planned on having the first class enter in Fall 2012 but it didn't work out.

I love how it is assumed we all know what the abbreviations are for not yet in existence med schools

Or even already in existence ones... I still don't know that one people talk about with the O and W in it (sorry, can't remember the whole abbreviation).

Considering all the UC's are named similarly, OP shouldn't be far off.

Its a California thing. We in California know University of California, Riverside as UCR. Yes we Californians expect the rest of you lackeys from other states to keep up with our lingo. I am sorry you do not live in this great state but we know you secretly want to live here anyways so you might as well get with the program. /sarcasm

Anyways like someone else said - don't hold your breathe. They didn't get preliminary accreditation last time because they could not secure recurring funding from the State/Regents of the UC and it looks like they are still in that predicament: http://www.pe.com/local-news/local-...rnor-says-he-wont-back-ucr-medical-school.ece

that's not surprising given the extreme funding cuts cali has going for higher edu

Yeah not surprising. And I kind of agree with the Governor: What is the sense in expanding when we are making cuts in the hundreds of millions to the UC's yearly?

the shortage of doctors comes to mind

i would love to get into UCR if they pull everything together. being in the pioneer class would be BOSS.

There's a projected shortage of practicing doctors. What good is opening additional medical schools when residency programs aren't growing as fast. And I agree that it's stupid to open another UC medical school when our current UC's are battling significant budget cuts.

I'm confused, is this uc riverside school of medicine opening independently of their joint prog. w/l ucla som?
Is it even on AMCAS? Their page makes it seem like they are already open for a full class, and is a standalone uc?

If UCR SOM ever opens, it's probable that the Haider program will be terminated. I don't have a source or anything..

University of California, Riverside has more than just a med school and has been known as UCR for a long time. Perhaps you're out-of-state, which would explain why you're not familiar with the term.

I was told that the IM residency for ucr might also open this year ( should find out this month). I think they are trying to get that residency open for when ucr-som is open.

In all fairness, there's no reason to expect a non-California resident to know this stuff. It's obviously intuitive to us because we live in California and hear the jargon all the time.

Unless it's application time. Then it sucks.

OUWB, maybe? It stands for Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, and it's in Michigan 🙂 I didn't know either, so I looked it up a few months ago. It's a pretty new school, I think.
