Has anyone been accepted at UCSD but was not called on the date that they said they would be calling? I'm sure I've been put in the acceptable applicant pool and thus didn't receive a phone call, but I was hoping maybe something happened and my file wasn't reviewed because one of the interviewers was out of town or something....so I wanted to see if this happened to anyone.

Also, has anyone called the admissions office to ask their status if they weren't called on the expected day? Were they helpful?

from what i know, ucsd is pretty good with calling if you have been accepted.

here's an email from brian zeglen that was forwarded to me by someone on the adcom. you might find helpful if you're in the acceptable pool like i am.

"We’ll stop sending conducting interview at the end of March (the last invitations typically go out in mid-to-late February.)

Acceptable pool invitations usually don’t start until the beginning of May. Basically, we are accepting applicants at a rate that will mean our class is “overfilled” at the end of the interview season…something like 200 acceptances will go out for our 134 spots. Then in March and April and May, we start to lose many of those 200 applicants, as May 15 is the date by which applicants must narrow their multiple acceptances down to just one. Usually, we’ve lost enough people to get under 134 by about May 1st

How we choose out of the pool? Well, we don’t have a ranked list, and the decisions are not strictly based on the applicant’s “score”. However, this doesn’t mean that the choices are completely random. The short answer is that the Dean makes the ultimate decisions and bases her decisions on all the factors that go in to arriving at that “score” in the first place. Perhaps somebody with a low overall score, but extremely strong letters of recommendation, and strong interview reports would stand a better chance than the opposite case (a higher score with lukewarm interview reports), but it really does vary…. sometimes a very in-depth commitment to some activitity (research, or community service) is enough to make us overlook a so-so interview performance. And while we do not officially reject anybody immediately after interview, I would say there are a number of applicants in this pool that will not receive serious consideration, for various reasons."

good luck!

On my expected day I didn't want to wait for Brian Zeglen to call, so I just went ahead and called him. He told me that I had been placed in the acceptable pool and then explained what that means, my chances, etc. He's a nice guy, so I would recommend calling and he'll tell you where you stand.

Anyone who interviewed on Jan 31 hear back this week? Zeglen said that there was a 1/10000 chance otherwise it would be the 20th

When I interviewed, Brian Zeglen gave us his phone number and told us that phone calls would go out in the afternoon, but that he would know by about 10am, so we are welcome to call. He said that he knows some people will be calling right at 10:01, and that it's okay - he wouldn't be giving us his phone number he didn't think it was okay. Nice guy 🙂
