Hello,

I recently transferred to UC San Diego with intentions of majoring in Bioengineering/Biotechnology. I got into UCSD, but with my alternate major which is Biochemistry/Chemistry. I told myself when I decided to go to UCSD that I would leave the subject of Bioengineering to rest. But during this summer, I landed the position of an undergraduate researcher in a Bioengineering lab. I really like Biochemistry and I am confident that I could get a high GPA, but I'm fascinated with Bioengineering.

I eventually want to major in Bioengineering for a MD/PhD regardless of my undergraduate major. There is a possiblity that I could switch my major to Bioengineering.

If I don't change majors, I was also thinking about double majoring in Biochem and Neuroscience.

I'm a bit scatter-brained! What would be the best choice? Medical School is the most important thing for me if I don't get into a MD/PhD program.

Well, number one is not to base your decision off of what you think is "best" for med school. There really isn't such a thing as far as acoms are concerned. It sounds like you should find a way to do bioengineering, since that is where you passions are. You basically just want to get a major that both interests you and you can do well in. As far as those two criteria, engineering is good for the first and notoriously horrible for the second.

If you can't get in to the bioengineering department, I would just choose one major. Neuro-biochem sounds like a monster to pull off, and as a pre med you will have much more to do than just school work. If you major in neuro or something, you can use that as base knowledge for further research in graduate/med school for bioengineering.

go with what your interested in. For you know it could lead you down a new, and better career path for you.

also I know its off topic but I was wondering if you could help me out. You see I am considering transferring to ucsd next fall and I wanted to know what you thought of school so far. Is it everything you thought it would be?

Thank You.

Jimmy270,

This is only my first quarter at UC San Diego, but I have had nothing but good experiences so far. It's a great location and a great research university. If you have any specific questions about the university, I would be happy to answer them.
