Hey I just wanted any one who is intersted in neurology to know that there is a vacancy in the program. If intersted thay should look on the SF match website for more information and contact Judy hayes.

Ok- so you may be wondering why there is a vacancy. I will tell you as I have just started here as a PGY2. One of the residents in my class (who I am sad is leaving) decided that she wants to do opthomology. It was a very difficult decision for her to leave. I know this b/c I consulted her to follow her true passion and follow her dream. B/c of this, she is gone and we want to fill the position with a GREAT candidate. So please apply if you are a GREAT candidiate. If you have any questions you can PM me. Oh- BTW i love this program and couldn't be happier. Thanks

hey, there are probably a bunch of us on here who are 4th yrs, considering applying to UCSD(apps due next week or so), if you have a second, we'd all really appreciate it if you might tell us why/what about this program you love/what it's like etc..
much thanks

Sorry it has taken me a while to reply. Anyways sure I would love to give you more info. Let me compile my thoughts and I wil get back to you. You can also PM me for more specific questions.

I'd like to know how the residents live. Do they rent studios an hour away, or can you find a decent place to live on a resident's salary within 15 minutes of the major hospitals?

Also, what the profile of the average resident? What proportion are from out of state (as in not raised OR educated in CA previously?

Thanks.

So there is just so much to say about this program! I am currently a PGY2 right now. I can tell you that I really truely love this program. Our program director Mark Kirchevsky is the kindest, most caring, physican I have met. He listens to all of our concerns and really makes an effort to address each and every one of them. I actually switched into neurology this year from stanford and it is such a wonderful change. Ok so let me tell you about the residents. Each year there are three per class. My year is awesome there are currently three of us and we go out to dinner twice a month, we hang out socially and we are great friends. My year there was four and the person who left realized that neurology wasn't for her she is going back home to another field. She was great and we are sad to see her go, but I told her she really needed to follow her heart wherever that may be. As for the other residents... i think they are really great. The seniors are fantastic. They totally take care of us always telling us to go home after call. My senior would do dications for me to help me out.
I would say call right now is 3.5days b/c we are one resident down, but it isn't bad. Once we get the added person it will be q4-5. The last two calls I had one admission. On average it is pretty hit or miss anywhere from 1-5 admissions a night. Post call they literally push you out the door...seriously the latest I have been in the hospital post call is noon. they are very sensitive about the 80 hour work week, and ACGME guidelines. yes, call is year round for PG2 and home call PGy3, pgy4 i think q14.
We get 3month of EEG & EMG which compared to other programs is a rarity. right now I am doing an elective in Neuro rads, and I love it.
As you progress through the program you get more autonomy. The PGy4 here rule the service. Seriously, I have heard the attending say to the senior resident you run the show.
In terms of the housing it is really not bad. I am renting for $600 in the sorento valley area. I know that la Jolla is expensive but there apt complexes that cater to the medical students...i think. I can get you more information about that.
I really don't know what else to say. I am very happy here. I know that we are in process of tryng to expand the number of residents. All of this is still in the works. I hope this was helpful if you have specific question you can PM me directly.
