I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the UCSD neurology residency program. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Small program, they take 3 people per year. Typically thought of as the #4 program in Cali. More competitive than the reputation would call for, due to San Diego being a wonderful place to live. Department chair is a DO, meaning the program is probably very DO friendly. That is about all I can tell you. Sorry.

I think they're all a little more competitive than their quality justifies cause it's California. UC-Irvine has a smallish, little bit old university hospital in Oragna and a VA in Long Beach (something like a 20-30 minute commute if traffic isn't bad). USC is pretty near some inner city neighborhoods but seems fairly safe. But it's a huge, busy public hospital and for good reason they have metal detectors at the doors. UC-Irvine seems more laid back, faculty somewhat quirky. USC had very energetic faculty and residents but has had really uneven numbers in the last few classes and doesn't seem to care to adjust that (though they probably just added a couple of spots to the program to compensate for the soon to be outgoing class of 2). I didn't visit UCLA but have heard good things. They probably aren't as busy but are very academic. Loma Linda and Harbor might be the lesser competitive of the LA programs right now. I think Loma Lindo and UC-Davis each had an umatched spot. UCSF and Stanford obviously have good reps.

In response to the program chair he is actually not a DO but an MD who went to medical school and residency at UCSD. There is one DO resident so it is some what DO friendly. Overall, a beautiful city but rigourous and demanding program. Borders on the malignant. In past years had a 33% drop out rate, but always fills. Current year no drop outs. In the first year straight Q3 in house call with no call free months. Second year Q3-4 home call with no free call months. Almost complete autonomy as a senior. Third year call freeexcept back up everyday when you are senior on service. This may be changing soon. Only three residents per year, but program is expanding to four residens per year.
San Diego is an amazing city so the malignancy is for you to decide if it is worth it. Most residents are happy but be prepared to bring antidepressants.

I'll be headed to UCSD in july of 07. They will be expanding their residency to 4 residents for next year's match.

All that call isn't so bad when you can go take a nap on the beach afterwards 😍

I guess you can do that in Ohio too, but it's been known to get a little cold up by Lake Erie.

I will also be heading to UCSD for July 2007. Program in place for 20+ years. Stroke, electrophys and cognitive/dementia are particular strengths of the program. Faculty base is very strong. Program director is fantastic, devoted and friendly. Clinically strong, well-rounded program with Electrophys 4mo EEG/Epilepsy, 4mo EMG/NM, perfect set up for private practice straight out of residency. There are stroke fellows pursuing interventional neurology at UCSD. They have a neurology-trained interventionalist on board. UCSD Rads dept is top 10. Plenty of clinical research and basic research opportunities if you're so inclined. The UCSD Neuroscience department encompasses UCSD Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery, Psychology as well as research at the Scripps, Salk and Burnham institutes, among others. The San Diego/La Jolla neuroscience community has the largest concentration of neuroscientists in the US, and has been regarded among the best in the world. The dept offers a post-residency research track with potential for acquiring a PhD, for the future academician. Call is busy. Increasing # residents/yr to 4. San Diego is expensive. Surf is superb. 🙂
