Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to give some feedback about this program. Looking back at old forums it seems like UCSD had some problems in terms of structure/lack of teaching etc. I know the new PD seems to have made new changes in the last year from what I saw during my interview, but I still feel like I didn't get a good sense of whether residents are really happy or not. I didn't get the chance to talk to many residents that day (also missed the happy hour due to plane issues), and the ones I did talk to were exhausted/post call interns who weren't too enthusiastic. Did anyone have a different experience?

Thanks

That's so funny. I only spoke with one intern on my interview day, everyone else was in their 2nd or 3rd year. All the residents I did speak to seemed pretty happy. I had been concerned about the fact that I didn't really get any face time with interns, but other people who interviewed there said they met lots of happy interns. I guess it goes to show how much of this depends on the day you interview and who you talk to. Which of course leaves me just as confused when trying to sort everything out.

Aside from that, it seems like they are still working on the structured teaching element of the program. The person I interviewed with said that he makes sure teaching rounds happen every day when he is on service, and seemed to feel that was the case with other attendings as well. Morning report only occurs a few times a week, and sometimes they cancel radiology rounds (it's supposed to happen 1x/week for the ward teams) if they are swamped on the floors. However, they have a great board pass rate and the residents say they feel prepared to go out into the real world after residency, so they must be doing something right down there.

I'm not a resident there, but each intern in my program spends 2 months on their ward and their seniors spend a month on our ward. We also spend a couple of months in their ER as senior residents. So, I think that qualifies me. PM me and I'd happy to answer any questions in detail.
