Hello,
I am an undergrad student at UCSD, and I've look for research opportunities with no luck so far. Can anyone give me any advice as to where to look? I've tried emailing faculty all over but they either do not respond or say there full.

Thanks

Did you ask your teachers?

Did you ask your teachers?

Start with your profs. Then talk with lab instructors/TA's/upperclassmates. Finally, I know ucsd has a work-study program that likes to set up students with nearby research institutes (salk, scripps, burnham, others). Check out postings there as well.

There's also several summer research programs. SURF and Amgen Scholars come to mind. However, there are definitely more programs. Try googling UCSD summer research. Even though some of the programs are strictly for the summer, I'm sure that many PI's would gladly allow you to continue through the school year, especially if you're working for free 😀

Better yet, continue in the lab while doing a bisp199 and get upper division credit for your "free" work.

La Jolla is the hub of the biotech industry. You practically get handed research opportunities if you know where to look. The postdoc student I do research for at the Salk Institute is going to be looking for another undergrad student pretty soon here.

Look at Salk, Scripps, UCSD, etc.

Yea I emailed a dozen or so professors. And for the summer research programs a lot of them require
LORs, but sadly I really can't get any before the deadlines because I've only been here a quarter.

I actually live at the village which is right across the street from Salk Institute. I've been emailing faculty there and most of them haven't responded while one or two told me their full. I'd like to know who this person is if you don't mind telling me.

I'm not sure I can say for confidentiality purposes but she usually advertises through UCSD. I go to USD and the only reason why I heard about it was because my ochem professor filled me in.
The other undergrad student that I do research with is a neuroscience & physiology major at UCSD. I'll ask her how she heard about this position. I'm sure it's a resource you have access to.

Okay, OP, I just checked jobs posted at the scripps research institute website. They have multiple part-time lab helper and research intern positions available right now. Scripps is just down the street from you, so get on that.

And yes, keep sending out emails. You're shooting in the dark but eventually you'll hit something.

You think I will get valuable research experience as a research intern because it looks like I'll be washing glassware and simple cleaning. And lab assistant requires, "Requires a minimum of 3+ years of related experience. Associate degree candidates, (scientific discipline), requires 2+ years of previous related experience." So I don't know if I qualify for that.

I say apply anyway. It can't hurt. I got my research position without any research lab experience. Those seem like steep requirements but maybe send in your CV and a cover letter that underscores your enthusiasm for the position.

What kind of research do you expect to do as a (what?) 2nd or 3rd yr undergrad at a highly respected institution whose engines are professionals with at least 7-12 more years of training than you? Are you just gonna waltz in there and start your own project?

Something like this gets your foot in the door. You prove that you're a competent, responsible person that can think and understand the projects that are going on in the lab. Then you get to do other stuff if you make an effort and express interest. That's often how it works.

Or you can just clean stuff, as suggested. It really just depends on your personal motivation.

Many students start off cleaning glassware and work their way into something. It isn't abnormal, and if you mention that you are willing to do this for a chance to work under someone it would be a plus.

Should I attach a resume and cover letter to my application for a intern research position. Because I honestly don't have anything to add to a resume at this point. Would it hamper my chances of getting the job if don't add the documents?
