Hey guys,

Been a while since I posted on here. Anyway, long story short I am a third year at UCSD, my grades are pretty good and I'm going to take the MCAT in a couple months, feeling pretty good about it. I want to take a year off before I go to med school but I'm having trouble with coming up with something to do. I've done a year of some good research but decided that I don't like research that much, I've got something like 150 hours of volunteering at a big hospital but I had to stop early because of transportation issues. I want to do something volunteer oriented, the hours are one thing but when I was volunteering I really enjoyed it and always wanted to do as much as I could. It also gives you good opportunities to talk to lots of people.

I've been thinking about getting a EMT-B cert next year and then working for that year in a hospital or triage or wherever the EMT guys are needed. Anyone in the SD area have any info on this?

Also, I'm having trouble coming up with other EC's to do, anyone got any good ideas? If the EMT thing doesn't work out I'm going to volunteer at the local hospital again for sure but anything else that you guys can think of that might be valuable? Like does anyone know about the doctors with borders scene, i've never looked into that much.

Thanks for the help. Also if I posted something in the wrong section or maybe a repost I'm sorry, I searched for the EMT thing but they were all 4 or so years old. Thanks again for the assistance.

yo.

i don't think you can do doctors w/o borders without a medical degree.

do you have a car? if you don't, it severely limits what you can do in sd. but if you do, i know a friend who is an ER scribe at oceanside (and i think there's another hospital that offers it too), a job you might be interested in. EMT i believe is pretty easy/doable... i think i can try to get you in touch with someone in the area who is an EMT/premed but you might want to just research it online.

what are you looking for in your year off? money? more clinical experience? more ______?

Have you thought about doing research? That would be beneficial for you in the long run, especially if you can find a topic you're interested in.
