I have a hard time making a decision. Please help. I have not received any Financial Aid information from any of the schools yet. I am looking for any personal experiences, as well as general feedback about each of the schools.

UCSD

Pros
  • Great research opportunities in my area of interest (AOI).
  • Well-known program in the field of medicine.
  • Location.
  • Values/School Mission/Community.
  • Top 21 U.S. news rank.
  • Weather.
  • Free clinic opportunities.
  • Many of my professors, advisors, hosts, and even my Dean went there for undergrad/grad studies and post-doc.

Cons
  • Cost of living/housing.
  • OOS/tuition
  • I have never been to West Coast.
  • It seems a bit more difficult to get in touch with the faculty and some of the current students.

EVMS
Pros
  • Community focus/Values.
  • Amazing social environment: nice current students, community physicians, faculty, and staff. Everyone is very approachable and easy to get in touch with.
  • Cost of living/housing.
  • Volunteering/Free clinic
  • Nice area, I generally like Norfolk.
  • Not too far from my community.
  • IS/tuition
Cons
  • Not research-oriented, even though there are some opportunities in my AOI.
  • No residency program in my AOI (I know it is early to think about it, but still).
  • Lower rank.
Overall, I like both schools. For some of you, the choice will probably be obvious, but I would love to hear your opinion.

San Diego is consistently voted as one of the nicest places int he USA to live. If you can truly get IS tuition after year 1, this is a no brainer!

Otherwise, EVMS is also solid.

Thank you for your feedback. It is the reason I am basically torn between the two schools because they are both solid 😀

You can't imagine how nice living in North San Diego County / Torrey Pines area is. One of the nicest places anywhere. And the school is like top 25 in the US and has been steadily getting more prestigious. You are the envy of many.

Thank you, I am very blessed to be given the opportunity to go there, and to have a choice at all. Also, thank you for your feedback! Have you lived in San Diego?

If you can get in-state tuition after M1 at UCSD, I'd go there. It will offer you better opportunities in the long run
Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it. You are right about the long run!
I am just wondering how much more debt I will end up with, given a substantial difference in living expenses.

I’d look into this if I were you. I believe according to UCSD’s website specifically, you do NOT qualify as in state if you are simply attending school in CA.

Interesting, I know for certain UC schools like UCLA, some of their scholarships assume your claiming IS tuition after the first year. Is the residency requirements not established at the state level?

Nope. All UCs have their own separate residency requirements. I looked into UCSD years before I actually applied because I am IS but went to school OOS and stayed for a job. Unfortunately, it is very complicated and they are all different
