I am in a position of having to choose interviews between these. What are the general thoughts on these two programs? I really am impressed by both. The only big negative I can think of is that UCSD takes 2/4 from its own med school. Thanks for your thoughts

If you are actually comparing these you should probably interview at MUSC over UCSD, so that a Californian in need can end his/her exile.

Seriously tho, I have heard good things about Storm Eye institute, but I don't know specifics. I just remember hearing the name.

UCSD is the bigger more prestigious academic institution with more NIH funding and bigger name faculty. The president of ASOPRS is there and one of the most published ppl in glaucoma is their chairman. I would imagine if you were going the academia route it might be helpful...
I know that they seem to appreciate people with strong research background and competitive numbers.

In terms of location, it's all personal preference. I'm sure storm eye institute offers more affordable cost of living. In general I think because California is a very desirable place to live for many, the majority of the California residencies have a hyper competitive applicant pool within an already competitive specialty.

Either of these programs will likely produce a fine ophthalmologist and it's all about your priorities and personal preference.
