To apply for financial aid at ucsf, you have to choose a stafford lender...... does anyone know which is the best? can we wait until after we receive a financial aid letter to decide who will loan the money?
thanks 🙂

They told me you need to decide - last month they even sent me a promissory note to sign before I found out what financial aid I'm getting (well I still don't know).

I made a spreadsheet of all of them and asked a friend's dad who is an accountant look at them and he said basically all are the same - his only words were to get one without an origination fee (even though they have the potential to save in the long run). I attached the sheet if you want to look - however now (I made it in January) I heard that they made all Stafford loans have a fixed interest rates instead of being based on the T-bill - not verified though.

This rules. Thanks.

I was gonna pick the AAMC one because it's specifically for med students. Then again . . . it's the AAMC.

Yeah, the only lender that seemed to rival Medloans was T.H.E. (northstar.org). It has no fees and the repayment cash-back bonuses seem a little more forgiving..... but I know nothing about finance!

Ugh. Me either. I hate money.

WashU (my other choice) automatically uses T.H.E., fwiw.

Here's another problem...... did you guys notice that in the top right-hand corner of the master promissory note, the date is expired? You can get notes online straight from the borrowers, but they look a little different than the ucsf one. i'm wondering whether the one from ucsf is expired on purpose... just as a formality? or if they're going to send it back, apologize for the wait, and hold off on financial aid info until you sign a new one.....! ugh

Hmmm. Mine is expired... never noticed that. I sent my promissory note in just under a month ago - and last week I recieved a letter saying that I had to attend an orientation before my loans got dispersed (but obviously I wouldn't be expecting them until September). I called their office and the receptionist said that they were preparing the financial aid stuff to be ready for our accepted students weekend. Anyone else have any info?

I hope that's true about the revisit weekend (that's what I've heard as well) . . . I *just* turned my stuff in today, FedEx, but somehow I missed the MPN for UCSF. Guess I'll be shelling out another $10 tomorrow to make sure it gets there on time. Ugh.
