good thing is out of staters can get residency within 1 year and qualify for that tuition, CA is good for that.

Also Gov Schwarzenegger has agreed to boost funding to higher ed once the two years for the budget (101.9 billion) is up. So, tuition will stabilize and may decrease in that time.

I'm very put off by the hike in tuition. It f#$%ing sucks actually. However, it is still cheaper than what my other choices would have been..and it is still a good deal in my opinion. I'd also like to reassure you that the budget will in no way affect medical education (aside from the tuition hikes). Our preclinical faculty are solid, our facilities are only growing, and our attendings and residents will be top notch.

Don't get mad at the uc system. It is a government thing. I personally think that CA has ridiculous politics.

There has been a thread about how there's a proposal for GRADUATE schools, 20% increase next year, then 10% after that.

However, apparently it's not something that has been approved yet, and the tuition raise is still uncertain for PROFESSIONAL schools...

It's even more of a burden for out-of-staters like myself...

This is true but his deal with the UC/CSU systems means nothing unless the legislature goes along. The Democrats oppose cuts to higher ed so we'll see what comes out of it. I highly doubt there will ever be a tuition decrease because California's fiscal problems have not been fixed ($10 billion in debt going into the new fiscal year with Arnold's proposed budget) and higher ed is one of the few places that can be cut. But hopefully between the deal and Democrats opposition to cuts, it can at least be stabilized so the increases are not as massive as they have been the past 2 years.

is UCSF generous or do middle income students have to take out all loans? and for UCSF, would you know what the middle income bracket is? i just got off another waitlist, and UCSF would be, by far, more expensive than this private school ... UCSF is the only school that i'm completely clueless about in regards to financial aid 🙁

I doubt this applies to many people...but it's definitely saving my behind. I found out my 10 months in FL has made me an out of stater (still have my CA license, paid CA state taxes this year). Luckily, if you attended a CA high school for at least 3 years you can get in state tuition. This applies to all UCs.

It really sucks though, because I haven't been here long enough to be considered in state at FL schools. So basically, I'm a resident of no state if that makes any sense.

How did you find out that you're no longer a CA resident? Did they contact you? Did you fill out the residency form as if you were a CA resident?

I filled out the residency form as a CA resident, but made no secret that I have been in FL since I graduated. There's no use in keeping that a secret since they have my 2003 taxes with my FL employer on it. Anyway, they sent me a letter asking me for 2002 state and federal taxes, etc. After they received those papers, the registrar determined I was a non resident. No, they didn't contact me....I've been trying to get on the phone with them for weeks. Finally got the answer yesterday.

Sigh, more paper work. 🙁

Fakeplaztiktree,
So is it UCSF or UCLA for you?
Either way, you're still paying in-state tuition, which is much better b/c it's half that of out-state.

this is M right? we met on Sunday? if so, how are you girl! i withdrew from UCLA woot woot! 😛 (if this is not M, my bad 😳 )

i just got these nice scholarships from schools in the east and in my home state ... money wasn't a huge factor in the beginning, but if i could save money, i'd certainly love to especially when i wouldn't be going to a lower tier school of any kind if i didn't go to UCSF .... i loved the students at UCSF the most, but i'm starting to get a lot of feedback from the students at other schools, and i'm very moved by their sincerity ..................

all the schools i'm looking at are awesome and i could flourish in any curriculum .. so it boils down to environment (students, faculty, etc.), location, and money .. in that order for me .. i just felt that the ppl at UCSF were so good-natured, down to earth .. definitely my kind of people .. but maybe i'm underestimating other places ... this is the worst possible time to be second guessing.
