ucsf secondary

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A lot of people have received it and turned it in. When did you submit your primary?

They recieved my app in mid-July and I still have not received a secondary from them. I got one from all the other UCs. I have a 3.8something and 38 MCAT. What do you have?

LoL. I doubt that. 😛 It's quite possible you guys are in the batch that will be a lot later than the last one since school starts next week pile. 😛 (No one here probably thinks you're going to get rejected pre-secondary 😛)

maybe it's in your spam box, who knows, i found a bunch of secondaries in mine

No, it didn't go into spam box, and their status page doesn't say they gave me a secondary.

any OOS get a secondary yet? i got the email saying they received my primary over a month ago but still no word on the secondary...

this is sdn. some people received it before they even applied.

Yeah. We should start a rumor that the best candidates get theirs in May.
😀

I was verified on 8/19, and got UCSF secondaries on 8/22 although on their website it says they sent the secondaries on 8/19. I got secondaries only from UCSF and UCI and no other UCs have sent me the secondaries yet.

Yeah I had the same thing, its wrong. Its just whatever day you were verified. The important date is to turn it in within 4 weeks of the email date.

If you got the secondary within 3 days of being verified, that means that they couldn't have done any screening besides numbers. That just confuses me more as to why I have not received a secondary from them yet (verified in late June).

they screen more than numbers; i actually attended one of their workshops and that's what they said, but who knows.

Wow. that sure as hell confuses me as to why you don't have one. You're IS, trad, MD app with solid MCAT/GPA, right? :S.

med11, they can't physically screen more than numbers (unless they screen for things easily checked off such as urm status) if they are handing out secondaries 3 days after verification. They cannot read through and judge essays and activities that quickly. And yes, I am a traditional instate with good numbers and mcat.

I counter that it IS possible to review an app for a screen for someone in three days. UCs don't get many apps since they're state schools. What I'm thinking is...the only thing we haven't talked about was your PS. The last big thing. Not to say it sucked, but was it at all risky?

no, it was not risky.

Call them. 😛 Are you alone? Or do you know anyone at ALL in your situation? It doesn't make any sense. Unless your PS was clearly not what they were looking for, I do not know how you can be in your situation. Regardless of how SF picks them.

Unless they accepted everyone they want a free checks from first and you're the ones they toy with because you get automatic acceptance with a good interview. 😛...

I just checked MDapplicants and all except one (an mstp applicant) applicant from Stanford, my college, are waiting for UCSF secondaries. Many have received the other UCs, but not SF.

I'm wondering if not getting one has to do with Stanford. Maybe they want all Stanford people at once to compare to each other. Maybe I'm just being to paranoid.

LoL. That may be it then. 😛 Everyone I've talked to was a UC student. It might be the school. If Stanford is having problems, maybe USC is the same predicament. I'm sure you'll get it soon now.

how do people get secondaries before they even apply? what the heck?

What's considered a "risky" essay?
For some of my secondaries I wrote about walking through a bad neighborhood on my way to work, mentioned racial tension, etc. Is that risky?

On a more related note, I'm OOS and received the UCSF secondary.

I go to a UC school, and have yet to receive the UCSF secondary. We'll just have to be patient. I have been verified for over a month.

I am in-state, 3.6 (slightly higher) BCPM / overall + 37 MCAT (13 PS, 12 VR, 12BS). I have not received either UCSF or UC Davis. No idea what's going on. I think my numbers might be a bit borderline (well, mainly GPA since my MCAT is "balanced") but hopefully I didn't get screened by numbers. Probably something lacking in my app. Though it is probably too early to say definitively that I got screened, I'm not feeling too good about how so many people have gotten theirs and I haven't gotten mine.

My AMCAS was verified near the end of June.

My gut is that it is too early to really matter for those, including myself, who have not recieved the UCSF secondary. I have heard from a UCSF student who attended my college, CSU, that the adcomm will not form to evalute secondaries for interview invites for at least another month. UC's take their sweet time and even tho they claim to be on rolling admissions, it is highly unlikely that solid applicants will be screened in the manner suggested above, despite the seemingly complex, random pattern for screening secondaries. Rest assured that time will reveal the method to this madness. 😉

Im OOS, was verified on 8/15, got a letter from them confirming that they have received my primary, but no secondary. My #'s are 38 and 3.77 overall. To all the other ppl that haven't received one, I've found that staying pessimistic helps

Bah 🙁 I go to Stanford too, and I have also not received a secondary.

One of my Stanford friends HAS received the secondary, but she's applying MSTP.

I think its time to put an end to the UCSF discussion. This speculation is hurting my head. UCSF screens on numbers. The numbers are weighted according to the historical stats about the how difficult it is to get a high at your school. There is a slight preference for IS, but very little since UC schools aren't really state schools. Same thing for the interview since there are no essays on the secondary unless you're apply MSTP or to the Berkeley med school. Us Californians get screwed over at other state schools, but we let everyone into ours... you're welcome!

Almost all schools are based on numbers for the first couple of rounds. There is no way those people in the offices read ALL of those ESSAYS.

BTW, this is according to a former member of the admissions committee at SF.

UCs aren't state schooL? i thought they accept mostly CA residents..

They are. More than half of those admitted must be from California. Anything public is a state school as it is funded by the state. :S That's not too hard to grasp. Because we have CSU's people think UC's are not. They are cheap for a reason and they get funding for a reason...to feed CA resident needs. Having said that, the UCs do allow much more OOS than some other state schools. This doesn't really deviate from the national averages where they admit anywhere from 5-20% of their class. USUALLY. I wouldn't be suprised of UCSF was 40% OOS.

Sorry i was a bit unclear. They ARE state scohols. But most state schools have really strict regulations about the schools being almost entirely from their state. UCs are not really like that. Some of them take up to 50% out of state, and considering the huge number of CA applicants, they don't have AS MUCH of a preference as others. But they are state schools, and they do usually take atleast 50% from in state. Some other schools are like this too, like Michigan.

But then there are douche schools like U of Washington who don't let anyone in. So compared to U of Wash and other schools, i don't consider UCs typical state schools.

Sorry for the confusion.

UCD and UCI have over 90% in state residents...

I don't think anyone holds it against ya, Ruz, for that oversight. We totally got your message. 😛

Touche!

But can I still hate Washington?

I think a current student said UCI had only one OOS person in the class this year...

You can definitely hate U Wash if you want, though heh

Heck yes! 30 whole dollars and all I got was a lousy we have your AMCAS e-mail. They could've at least mailed it to us with some fancy paper maybe embossed with gold leaf...

Gosh. I hope the person wasn't Asian 😛 Not racist, but... c'mon 😛 60% UG....

BTW, I onlly applied there for MD/PhD, but the *******es thought I was applying MD too, so they decided to kill a tree on my behalf (just like you). Then I got rejected from their MD/PhD, so they killed a second tree.

I'm no tree hugger, but i'm in San Diego half the time and I can't get my mail readily, so I'd appreciate an 21st century electronic response. I hope they get more RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm lost. I only got a single e-mail from them. I haven't really been "rejected" more like I'm sure they're not even considering me. Haven't heard from them in a month. If I can get the satisfaction of having a school spend money on me even it if it's barely a quarter. I'd be more satisfied than a free 200 kb. In any case, I think our core sentiments are the same. 😛

Generally if you are applying MD/PhD, you have to be accepted by the MD program to be considered by the MD/PhD program. There are instances where a school will reject your MD/PhD application, but you may still get an interview or acceptance to the MD program. However, if you can't get into the MD program, you will get rejected from the MD/PhD program, guaranteed.

My point is that they're not "*******es" - if you apply MD/PhD, your application is reviewed by MD admissions at ALL schools.

Actually, i looked into that because I know that Washington doesn't accept out of state people.

The MSTP program is federally funded so they have to allow people from across the country to apply in order to receive funding.

You're right. Generally, that's the case. But because Washington doesn't allow MD from out of state (unless some extreme conditions) their program has to accept people who wouldn't be considered for MD.

So they are still ******* in my book. Despite being a great competitive school.

I thought I was screened from UCSF until I recently received its secondary few days ago. Betw, my app was verified in June.. so I guess 1) their screening isn't entirely based on numbers 2) it could take awhile to hear back from them.
