I have some questions regarding the Amgen and SRTP programs at UCSF:

1) I already work at a UCSF lab, is it possible to request to be placed in the same lab?

2) Can I NOT stay in the dormitories and continue to stay in my apartment in the city?

3) Is attendance required at the activities/social events (I wont have much time to dedicate to these activities as I will also be taking MCAT classes)?

4) If I apply to Amgen as first choice and dont get in, can I still be accepted to SRTP as second choice? (Is Amgen more prestigious by the way?)

You would have to call the director and ask. This program is designed to recruit people to UCSF. You're well aware of how awesome UCSF is, though.

Yes, but you'll have to come to the dorms for meetings, etc. A lot of people who lived in the city still lived in the dorms because you had 60 other friends around rather than just your parents or siblings.

3) Is attendance required at the activities/social events (I wont have much time to dedicate to these activities as I will also be taking MCAT classes)?

Yes, absolutely. He would probably kick you out of the program. If you're taking MCAT classes, I would recommend against doing that program. You really can't do an MCAT class and UCSF SRTP (Amgen is the same, Amgen and SRTP people were indistinguishable).

4) If I apply to Amgen as first choice and dont get in, can I still be accepted to SRTP as second choice? (Is Amgen more prestigious by the way?)

Yes, you can still be accepted to SRTP if they don't want you for Amgen. Amgen is probably slightly more prestigious, but SRTP is great anyway. The only difference between Amgen and SRTP was that Amgen Scholars got to go to UCLA for a weekend for the Amgen Symposium with Amgen Scholars from around the other nine sites.

I'd like to emphasize that last summer at UCSF was probably one of the best summers of my life. I met some really amazing people, worked really hard in the lab (sometimes 60+ hours per week), learned more over the summer than I do in a semester, and really just overall enjoyed the program. The director of the program is a really cool guy too.

I have a quick question. I applied to UCSF SRTP, but I received a letter from Vanderbilt saying that I had been accepted into their Minority Summer Research Program. However, I have to reply by February 26th with my decision. Does anyone know when UCSF sends out its first batch of acceptances?

I just checked my email and saw that I was accepted to the SRTP on March 11 last year.
