Just wanted to get a sense of people's takes on these programs- im thinking subspecialty but open to primary care as well. - and ultimately, what order would you rank these three programs?

my gen thoughts on each:
UCSF: prob best rep academically of the 3, multi site (+diversity of training, - less resident cohesion/some isolation), diverse and talented residents, some flux with program leadership, great location, residents seemed to be a little exhausted and more on the independent do their own kinda thing types
CHO: has a rep of being more "community", good rep but prob weakest of 3 in terms of academic rep, residents seemed pretty happy, good location, underserved pop (seen at sfgh and olive view too but really focus on that here), stand alone childrens hospital
UCLA: tri campus with diverse pt pop, amazing new hospital, happy residents (maybe more protected/less exhuasted than those at sf), la traffic sucks- esp getting to olive view, good academic rep (prob <sf but >CHO), "nicer" area of LA

im having difficulty coming up with a good order for these and would love any thoughts. thanks!

no one has any thoughts on these at all?

I interviewed at UCSF and UCLA and I agree with what you have said. I think UCSF is a very unique program, great for some people and not for others. Lots of responsibility, autonomy, scut, and 5 different clinical sites has the residents all over SF. Clearly a great reputation and in an awesome city.

UCLA I thought was an excellent program as well. A little more cohesive and far less intimidating than UCSF. I think the new hospital is a perk and like you said you'll see a more urban, diverse patient population. Both programs have superb research, community outreach and international opportunities.

I thought UCLA would be a better fit for me than UCSF so its higher on my rank list. But its a clearly a personal decision. UCSF seems like a very challenging program, you'd constantly be learning a new hospital system, meeting new staff etc... your intern year. If you're the kind of person that needs that change of pace than you'd probably jump on that opportunity.

are you talking about CHOC?

I didn't apply to UCLA, so I can't comment on that.
I thought the residents all seemed happier at CHO and I got the sense that some of the UCSF residents didn't even remember each others' names after being at the separate sites. However, I loved the faculty that I interviewed with at UCSF and academically it has a better reputation (although CHO is still pretty highly regarded across the country among pediatricians from what I've heard). Overall, I felt I'd be happier at CHO.
