Hey guys, I am a Canadian, and am wanting to get into UCSF!! I'll be taking my PCat in august, and a GPA of 3.6. Do you guys think I stand a chance of getting for next year?? A few extracurricular... and some volunteer experience. Do they weigh your EC and volunteer heavily? What do they look for in choosing people?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

I assume California residency is weighed in somewhat...

I don't think they give consideration to the PCAT or residency status. It's a fair playing ground for everyone.

Thank you guys for your help!!! I really appreciate it!

Can you please provide me with information regarding what stats can get you in and what do they weigh on except for GPA!

Did you or anyone whom you know got in????

Thank you once agian!

I got in... in 1991

I think I wasn't special enough for UCSF because my grades were weak, but I did get waitlisted. It's my perception that they really want well rounded students - not in terms of weight - but in leadership capacity and in academic prowess. They stress communicative abilities and the genuine desire to go out there and help people. They have the ability to hand pick their entering class given the number of highly qualified applicants that apply.

I'm pretty sure you just have to be awesome.

😀

Getting into any out of state school is difficult. U of Toronto has a good school. I visited it....it was nice....and only 15 miles Southeast from Dave and Busters. What makes you want to go to UCSF over the bazillion other schools?

My personal opinion: I think too many people put too much weight on the whole rankings thing with UCSF. Sure, it's an awesome school, but don't ignore the dozens of other schools out there. One of them might just fit you better. If you're after a PharmD, you don't HAVE to go to UCSF, and future employers won't look down on you because you don't have a UCSF degree.

Not to mention that the second you leave California, they won't give you a notch up, either. Unless you are dealing with a graduate who left the state and is also suffering from pharmacy school delusions of grandeur. Which happens.

But I won't get into this again. I already had a lengthy thread once....

I dont think you need a pcat for any of the pharm schools in california...correct me if i'm wrong....so anyway, my friend got accepted last year and her gpa was 3.19 with about two years of working experience at a pharmacy...

UCSF, as much as everyone thinks they're oh-so-tough to get into and good, doesn't seem to only admit "book smart" high-GPA students. I think what they're looking for are people who want to be leaders in Pharmacy. They look at your experience and what you want to do with what you've done and learned. Both of which you portray in the activities you've attempted and your essays, and subsequently during your interview.

Remember, there are a lot of other amazing pharmacy shools, and UCSF isn't the only one. It's a great school, but so are a lot of other schools out there. Don't let yourself get stuck with something you think you want but that may not be what you really want. Some schools aren't for everyone, so just keep an open mind 🙂

"I assume California residency is weighed in somewhat..."

no, they do not really consider that...
Here's a good idea of what the most recently admitted class looks like:
This is about the class of 2010:
http://pharmacy.ucsf.edu/pharmd/admissions/aboutstudents/

Residency
87.80% California residents
10.57% Out-of-state residents
01.63% non-US residents

Nationality
91.87% United States citizens
08.13% Not United States citizens

Here's some insight into the most recent application form:
Don't forget, you need their supplemental application as well as the pharmCAS application (online.)

the essays include:
Of these 4, you do not have to answer all. however, it is to your advantage if you can frame your history to something related to these questions (not all are required... actually, all of them are optional.)

1 please tell us about any unique circumstances involving your family and/or the community in which you were raised, and how these soial and or cultural factors might have adversely affected the pursuit of yoru education.

2 economic factors, such as the need to work, dependent care, family resource etc can often seriously impede an individual's academic progress. use the space below to elaborate on any economic issues that affected your schooling.

3 the availability and types of schooling offered, as well as the history of education in one's family and or community might vary significantly. comment below on any educational disadvantages you feel you might have had to overcome.

4 do you now have, or have you had in the past, any learning or physical disabilities that might have adversely affected your academic performance? If so, indicate what accomodation, if any, you were provided in high school and college.

You must answer these 3:

1 expand upon one of the outside activities you listed in your pharmCAS application by discussing how yoru participation demonstrates evidence of leadership ability and/or self-initiative. Include information on the degree of your involvement as well as any unique skills, knowledge, and insight you may have gained through your participation in this endeavor.

2 how do issues of diversity affect and shape interactions between pharmacists and patients? Use examples from personal experience to frame your reply.

3 what insight into the human condition wil you bring to your studies at UCSF? (This is a tough one. I think maybe they might change this when you apply in a few years, but don't quote me on this.)

4 Other. You may use the space below to tell us anything else you would like us to know about you.
(USE THIS space!!! Write something about yourself that you have NOT mentioned before.)

Key in these essays is to highlight something NEW and UNIQUE about yourself that the application does not already say.
Do not repeat the same thing a million times, in other words.

GOOD LUCK!!~~~

I got in in 1973!

Keep in mind...they want to know what you'll contribute to the field - not what you'll get from them!

They probably didn't know how to react when you submitted your book, I mean essays!
