UDM or USC?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would personally go to UDM. I believe the cost of going to UDM is going to be a bit lower than USC. Many people that are going to chime in will tell you its always wiser to go to a school where you're saving money.

I should ask though, where are you the happiest at?

UDM pros: UDM's about 80K cheaper and clinically stronger. Practice in both school clinic and hospital. Canadians can live in Canada.

Cons: Detroit

USC pros: LA. More scholarships available.

Cons: More expensive and not as clinically strong.

PBL can be either pro or con depending on the person.

I would do USC for sure. USC has gotten so much negativity for their PBL, but it's really not that bad. In fact, I think it's very well fit for the field of dentistry. They are clinically as just as good as UDM. The fact that UDM is in Detroit is a legitimate con. Your location matters much more than you would think for dental school. Consider where you want to work after school. USC will open countless opportunities in California, and likewise, the rest of the country. UDM will provide many opportunities in Michigan and nearby areas, but as much in California.

Thank you for your opinion and information. It is so difficult to choose one. Sorry for the person who will get the seat to make you wait.

I personally think UDM would be the better choice. I have a friend that goes there and he told me that most students commute to school and live at nearby suburbs..... I mean, we spend most of our time IN the dental school anyway, and located at Detroit will certainly provide an ample patient pool.

Yep, being in Detroit can actually prove to be an advantage rather than a disadvantage in this situation. You will definitely not have trouble finding patients if you go to UDM. And honestly what is wrong with it being in Detroit? Yes there are some parts of the city that should be avoided but where the campus is located specifically is not one of them. There are plenty of housing facilities, restaurants, malls, etc. in Southeastern Michigan within a 15-20 drive of the campus. So if you actually feel unsafe about the city you have plenty of alternatives for when you are off campus.

On the other hand, the weather could be a problem. Michigan winters are terrible and last pretty much from November to April. In January a wind chill of -20 F was normal. Even right now in April we are still getting chilly weather (30s-40s) and spring is yet to come. Our summers are nice, but short. Idk where you're from but if you like sun/warm weather maybe it's a better idea to go to school in LA.

Oh one more thing, if you went to UDM you would definitely need your own car--public transportation is virtually nonexistent in Michigan. I don't think the same thing can be said about LA.

I need to make a final decision between two.
What do you guys think?
Hello, I know its been awhile for you but I am in the same situation you were in two years ago. If you don't mind sharing, where did you decide to attend and why? Also, how do you like your school and do you have regrets? Thank you! 🙂
