Finally got accepted to UDM today. Everything moved extremely fast. Interview last Monday (my only interview), waitlist letter on Friday, acceptance call today. Just wanted to let everyone know that the waitlist IS moving at UDM.

congratulations... see you in 4 months

Congrats Slayer!

I have only one question...was Karen the one who called you?

I wish UDM gave me some love. When did you apply and what were your stats?

The associate director of admissions called me, not Karen. It was a 734- number which caught me off guard (Detroit is 313). My stats : GPA 3.1 sGPA 3.3 DAT: 21 AA, 21 TS, 21 PAT. UDM was my only interview (my stats are clearly below average), but I am from Dearborn, which is roughly 10 minutes from UDM. That probably played into my favor, along with the fact that in my opinion, my interview went great. I couldn't be happier right now. UDM was by far my #1 choice from day one. Good luck everyone! BTW, at the interview I was told that >20 were accepted from the waitlist last year. Keep your heads up!

Congratulations man, that's good stuff. I'm in the area myself, so UDM is very attractive to me for money saving reasons among others. But they aren't showing me love. I already have an acceptance, and I am grateful for that, but UDM will allow me to live at home in Windsor, or if not at home I'll be able to get really cheap accommodation.

I'll keep hoping, and if nothing comes through, it's alright.

Congrats,

I am also in UDM Class of 2015. Been looking at housing in Detroit. Was looking at Dearborn & Royal Oak but realtor suggested a 1BR apt near Henry Ford Hospital. It is only 3.5-4 miles from UDM dental school. I would love to hear your recommendation on housing in Detorit. Tx

Just wondering to all you guys that were accepted, how much is the tuition at UDM?

I've heard 65-70K/year. I called the financial aid office last week to check the status of my fafsa and they told me that next years cost hasn't been finalized yet....but expect it to go up. However, UDM is a private school so I would think it's immune to the HUGE education cuts happening at public institutions in Michigan.

en142, do you have access to a vehicle? If so I would recommend finding a place in the burbs (Dearborn, Royal Oak, etc.).....Living by yourself in the D might present some problems. Don't get me wrong I love Detroit but it is farrr from a safe place. Most people dont understand that Detroit really is a very different place. The stories you may have heard are understatements haha. If you do decide to live there though, I would recommend trying to find an apartment in midtown (near Wayne State). Midtown has a ton of students and is patrolled regularly. I went to Wayne State for undergrad and you cant walk down any street without seeing at least one cop, whether it be WSU, Detroit, or state police. The same can't be said for most other parts of Detroit (besides maybe downtown).

I would not live there.

Hi Slayer37 & dentalWorks:
I will have a car but I am not a really strong driver so would prefer not to drive longer distances or possibly car pool with a classmate. Dearborn is about 10-15+ miles from dental school and Royal Oak is about 15-20 miles from dental school.
If in Dearborn and Royal Oak: where should I be looking at for apartments and roughly what is the going rent for 1BR or 2BR?
I think there is a housing fair for UDM dental May 20th.
Is there an official thread/facebook for accepted UDM class of 2015 dentistry?

Thanks

If you want to be in the Detroit area, places in Mid-town, around the Wayne State campus would be good for you to look for housing. Now of course you won't be able to stay on any of the Wayne State owned ones, but all the other ones are pretty solid.

How much are you planning on spending on monthly rent?

I have no idea what is the current rental prices in Detroit, Dearborn or Royal Oak. Admissions office suggested $500/m if sharing 2-3BR with someone or $700 plus/m if 1BR on my own.

You are in Windsor? I have dual US & Canadian Citizenships but lived in western US for 13-14 years. The thought of living in Windsor crossed my mind but not sure of the traffic and toll costs each time crossing the bridge/tunnel would be worth it. Also Canadian $ is much stronger than US $ now! What is rental cost in Windsor for 1BR or 2BR apt?

Got a call from Dr. Jeffers(sp?) today, placed on the wait list for now at UDM. I am hoping things will move as quickly for me as it did for the original poster. As far as housing goes I have also heard good things about apartments in the Midtown/Wayne State area. I am currently attending Wayne State so I can attest to the security in the area. I also have a lot of classmates that live in the Royal Oak/Ferndale area and they seem to like it there.

Sadly I don't know about apartment costs in Windsor because my family lives in Windsor so I don't have to rent there, but I'll make the assumption that it would be similar to places in Detroit.

It wouldn't be worth it for me if I was paying for housing in Windsor, and actually for convenience I lived in Detroit until this current semester. Since I'm living at home and don't have to pay for living expenses and don't have class every day (only two this semester), it works out to be cheaper than renting somewhere.

If I was going every day, I'm not sure I'd be too pleased.

Using the tunnel, you can get a roll of 20 tokens for $70 American. Even though the Canadian dollar is higher now, it's still $80 Canadian, so it's not worth it that way. That will make it $3.50 to cross, or $7 a day.

In terms of traffic, as a student, you would definitely have to get a Nexus Card which isn't difficult at all and makes things much better in terms of crossing the border. As long as you're not leaving for Detroit in the evening before some sports or other event you should be good. I don't really ever leave at those times when I'm going to school, so I haven't had any issues with traffic holding me up.

But I would suggest staying in the US just for convenience. If you ever had to go back home and come back to school you won't have to feel the burden of paying toll. As long as you live a reasonable distance to UDM, you should be fine.

Hardwork....I know someone who just got accepted off of the waitlist at Michigan who originally put a deposit down at UDM. He's decided to attend Michigan and is planning on notifying UDM about his decision today. That will free up a spot. Are you a bio major at WSU?

Glad to hear that the wait list will be moving! I am actually finishing up a MS in Basic Medical Sciences this summer at Wayne. Keeping my fingers crossed that I won't need to reapply.

Hey guys,
I'm supposed to be interviewed in a couple weeks for a spot on the waitlist at UDM. Can anyone tell me about their interview experience (what kind of questions were asked) and how to prepare for it.
Hope to meet you all in September.

very basic dental interview questions:

The first question they asked me was "so tell me about yourself"... very general, nothing specific.

then after that, the questions begin:
-why dentistry?
-why detroit mercy
-whats ur weakness / strength
-I had alot of C's and few D's in my older undergrad years, they asked me about them... actually, I got flogged about them multiple times, I thought I was done for it.... ended up being accepted Dec 1st at like 9AM lol.
-dental school is very stressful, what are some activities that help you manage stress?

Few more questions, the interview will last 1 hour.

Thanks so much dentalWorks. Anyone else have any other UDM interview questions/experiences to share?
Much appreciated.

Same as Dentalworks. We may have had the same interviewer. Heavy emphasis on time management, stress relief, past grades, etc. They want to know if you are responsible/driven enough to handle the cirriculum. "Why dentistry?" will probably be the first question you get asked.

Hey all, two reasons for my posts. One, I was called earlier and I am no longer on the wait list, I have been accepted! So I will be seeing a few of you in August. I am very excited and want to go and celebrate but I have finals this week that I still have to do well on.
Anyways, part two, I wanted to leave my input about interviews. Mine was really laid back. My interviewer didn't really ask me many upfront questions, it was more of a laid back conversation about what I have been doing and about what UDM has to offer, why I would be a good fit there, etc. I mean yes there were questions tossed back and forth but I never felt uncomfortable, I never felt like I was unprepared and never struggled to answer any questions. This could have been a result of the light preparations I made for the interview, but I felt really comfortable through it all.

Accepted!!! Everything is moving quickly now. I'm looking for a place in the Royal Oak area. Anyone interested in being my roommate or in need of a roommate?

I am considering a roommate as well in Royal Oak. I am female. How about you.
