Has anyone had an interview at UF yet this year? If so, how did you prepare for it? What did you like about the school? What didnt you like? ANy rec. on a hotel to stay at that is close by? any info would be great, thanks....

Seriously I wouldn't stress too much about the interview. It was much more laid back than I thought it would be. I was still pretty nervous, but most of the questions were straight forward. I visited the interview feedback, looked at the website, and thought about answers to some common questions. I have heard quite a bit of negative things about UF, but the interview gave me a positive impression. Even though the facilities are not beautiful, they are top notch in academics. If you plan on practicing in Florida, UF is a great start with 100% pass rate on the FL licensing boards last year.

No preparation--just dress well and don't forget to turn your brain on...

Pluses:

The school did have a 100% pass rate for Florida licensure exam--that's very, very, very hard to beat!

Relatively small class size--everyone finishes, 99%...

General hospital setting, enough patients.

Students get to wear jammies (scrubs) from day one while at the school.

Everyone seemed happy to be there, facilities are new, instruments are leased.

Minuses:

Gainesville!

Lack of parking for students around the school.

Florida.

Did I mention G-town?

I drove 400 miles--so no info on hotels...

Everyone hates G-Ville, but I am here to tell you that this place is one of the best in the world!

Gainesville..... AKA.....Gaines-Vegas!

The closest hotel to campus is the Hilton, if that is too pricy. There are 2/3 on Archer Rd. that are close too. I can't remeber the names, but zip is 32608

I just had my interview earlier today and wanted to share my experience. Physically, I prepared for the interview by getting my suit dry-cleaned and my shirt pressed. Mentally, on the way to Gainesville, my friend went over the interview questions they might ask us... and that's the extent of my preparation.

I really loved the setting of the school... granted it's the first dental school I've visited, so I'm easily impressed, but the building is tied to the main gigantic hospital called Shands. The dental section gotten renovations ... like... windows put in (not really important...) And clinic wise, many of the labs gotten whole new chairs and equipments. It's getting a lot of tech upgrades like the CEREC machines.

The professors... if the interviewers and the 2nd year students were of any indication -- must be pretty good. All the students we spoke with today loved the school so far, and highly recommended the school. Some thing happened today and the 2nd year students had a big break after my interview and I got to speak with quite a few of them -- they're all really happy and cheerful people!

There's really nothing I didn't like about UF dental school. Some people dislike the area due to Gainesville being a college town, but I think it's a good place to be.

The hotel I stayed at was called the Paramount Hotel. It's about 5 minutes drive away from Shands, and only cost $40 a night through priceline.com

As for the interview... I was stressed sitting outside beforehand, but soon as I got in and introduced to the smiling interviewers - the stress went away and I responded naturally and easily!

Does anyone know if UF calls the applicants that they accept on the morning of Dec. 1? I was looking through old posts and some people mention that Dr. Sposetti called them early in the morning. Anyone know if that happened last year and if it will happen again this year?

That's what I was told on the interview. The secretary said they try to call as many people as possible in the early morning of Dec. 1 before you go to work. That might be a wake up call 6am in the morning 🙂

Yes. My good friend is a first year and she was called at 7:30am on December 1st. I am not going to be able to sleep a wink the night before!

If anyone is still looking for hotels, the Cabot Lodge is the best. It's on Archer. It has a great breakfast (free) and happy hour (also free)...though maybe you should not take advantage of a free all-you-can-drink bar the night before the interview? 🙂
