Hi everyone,
I dont go to UF, but while on the application circuit I was accepted and chose UF over most other dental schools. Including Penn with 1/2 tuition scholarship.
To be honest, I liked the campus a lot and the program is well recognized all over the country. Not only do they have a strong clinical curriculum but research at UF is pretty strong too. The "myth" is that you'll not have enough clinical cases to complete requirements in order to graduate. Simply, not true! I know specialists as well as generalists out of UF with great clinical skills.
I have two friends attending UF and several more coming in this year, and the only complain they have is the "third semester" (aka classes during the summer) which only gives a couple of weeks vacation after a hard first year. Also, they dislike the isolation experienced in Gainesville. I mean, if you're from a big city, moving to an 80,000 rural town where half of the population are college students could be depressing. On the other hand, tuition is way less than other dental schools (in the range of 12000 per year) including living expenses. I can't get better than that.
The truth is that it all depends how much time you put into the books. No matter which dental school you go to, if you study hard and practice your hand skills, you'll be a good dentist.
My advice is.... if you got in at UF, go there. I went through the same desicion making process a year ago, and it came down to UF, no questions asked.
I hope this helps.
