Just got a call from a pt saying they faxed in their rx... made me think about others who got ahold of our fax number and somehow sending us their rx via fax without telling us... this is something I've never really though hard about but uhh wonder how often this happens

As long as you're using your pdmp and billing insurance, shouldn't be an issue. Like above said, check the number on the fax.

I would be more concerned about phoning in scripts then faxing. Saves the person 10 cents since they don't have to go to the library and get charged for the fax.

do people still fax rxs? I haven't worked retail in years, but thought almost all were e-scribed

Not giving out your fax # to people helps a lot...seriously have people ask if they can fax or phone in their own script because they want to waste everyone's time. I politely ask if he or she is a healthcare professional, which office, etc. then the conversation usually ends

When I was a student, there was an old lady who would terrorize the pharmacy by doing this.
Nobody knew when she got the fax number, but it wasn't long before she got an asterisk added to her name.

After that, my preceptor started throwing away every fax we got for her.
