3. Tuition and Fees

Students who complete the curriculum in the expected four-year period should expect to pay tuition and fees for 10 semesters. Tuition and Fees rates are subject to annual increases. Students who opt to enroll in the Decompressed Program will pay tuition for five years. Details on this program are available in the Office of Student Affairs.

Anyone know what this is all about?

I'm not sure what that's about either but does it have anything to do with the fact that between the 2nd and 3rd year there is only 1 month off so they might count the 3rd year as having more than just 2 semesters?

Yes, I think that's right. There's a summer "semester" no?

Yes, but I believe many schools have a short summer break, especially 3rd and 4th years, with 11 or 12 months of school a year.

Is it common practice for med schools to charge for this "semester"? This is the first I've heard of it, although I've heard that some schools charge significantly more for tuition during the 3rd and 4th years.

I attend UIC. The two extra semesters are your summer semester after your M2 and M3 years. Yes, many schools charge when you go year round, and some schools adjust the prices because they can. Northwestern goes something like 32, 45, 45, 20 for tuition. Why? Who knows.

I take that to mean that 4 years' tuition may add up to 10 semesters' tuition due to possible tuition increases. So, expect to pay about 10 semesters worth of the current tuition price.

I still think they charge extra as Force Field mentioned. I was thinking along the same lines as you until I did the math and realized that this would require staggering price increases of over 15 percent per year.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Regardless, UIC is the cheapest school because it is in-state. It may not be drastically cheaper than private schools, but with tuition and with the housing it provides (dorms), they are much cheaper. When I received my financial AID statements from UIC and other IL private schools, UIC was charging me around 33-35 thousand, and the private school ended up at about 51 thousand. Bottom line, it's cheaper. Even with the raised tuition for years 2 and 3 or whatever, it's cheaper compared to the IL private schools.

I was referring to in-staters. For out-of-staters, UIC is a complete rip off, and you're better off trying to marry an in-state resident so you can pay less. There were some out-of-state students who were offering 5 grand to get married to in-staters (a joke of course), but hey, it makes you wonder. 🙂

If I don't get in anywhere else, that might be a SERIOUS consideration for me.
