Hi every1, I know it is still early, but I thought it would be fun to do this. If there are people who for sure know that they will be at UIC next year, i think it would be cool to get to know one another before August (even if it is only December) b/c we will be seeing a TON of one another in the next 4 years. So if there is anything anyone wants to post about themselves or the school, let's do it here!

I may be going there. I was just accepted, but haven't decided where exactly I'm going yet. I do have a question though- the acceptance materials went to my parents' house and I'm not going to be there for a few days. I wanted to submit the campus selection card ASAP because I'm not gonna go to UIC if I end up at one of the campuses outside Chicago. I interviewed at the Rockford campus and just wasn't impressed at all. I love big cities and have no interest in family medicine or rural medicine, the big foci of the Rockford campus. Anyways, it seemed that you have to send in all the preregistration materials and a deposit with the campus selection card. I don't want to get locked into going there- is there any way to find out what campus you'd be at before committing to attend?

they let you know which campus you are assigned to before may 15. does anyone know how many spaces are left for the chicago campus? i'm kinda in the same boat, where i will not attend if i am not in chicago.

I was curious as to what you guys dislike about the champaign campus?

I too will be going to chicago. I hate the small towns (like the one I'm living in right now). I like big cities🙂

I would like to be if only Santa sends an interview my way this year after all I have been excellent this year.........

One of my friends interviewed at Peoria on Dec.8, and they told him that Chicago was 1/2 full at that point. I interviewed in Peoria on Nov. 8, was accepted on Nov.20 and got my chicago campus confirmation on Dec. 2. I am just telling u guys so u have a ruff time estimate. Basically, when i used to nag uic about getting Chicago they told me that it doesnt fill up until the first of the year. So basically people that interviewed and were accepted in the dec. decision date should have no trouble getting Chicago. If u look at the previous years on sdn, all the ppl that wanted chicago in december got it, and only starting Jan did it get less likely. I do not want to get any1's hopes up, but this is just what i have seen and trust me UIC-Chicago was my first choice skool so i researched everything extensively. I hope that helps! And i hope i see all of u that want to be there in Aug. of next year!

thanks! that is exactly what i wanted to know!

Thought I'd join in and say hello. I got accepted today and am quite excited.

Just dropped off my acceptance letter 👍 (+ site location preference). I am so glad this is finally all done. I wonder how likely we are to get our preference for Chicago this time of year...does anyone know? Anyways, most likely, I will see you all (that end up attending) next year. Best of luck to all that are still interviewing and waiting to hear back!!!
Laters,
Nanomed😎

When i was talking to them in November, they had said that Chicago campus does not fill up until end of Dec. early Jan. So i think chances are still good for you guys. I'll definetly be there next year...=) Just a random fact, yesterday i visited UIC and the resident director there told me that between M1 and M2 25% of students undergo severe depression to the point of attempting or successfully committing suicide! Scary huh?

Really? I hadn't realized my classmates were so down. I think that number might be a bit inflated. I won't deny that some students aren't the chipper folks that they were when they came in, but a quarter of us? To my knowledge there haven't been any "successful" attempts yet this year or last, and I do hope that continues. Don't get me wrong, it's stressful, but we're adjusting to it slowly but surely...

I really, really want to study at the University of Illinois. I was very impressed by the medical students, the faculty, and the other kids that came to interview.

Unfortunately, I'm OOS... I'll need a bit of aid to deal with that $54,000 tuition. 😱

Is anyone else going to be at UIC this fall? I got my chicago assignment a few weeks ago, so I think i'll be there.

i will most likely be b/c i doubt uchicago will give me an interview off of the hold list...

YAY! UIC is awesome! Excuse my obsession with that school! All med schools are awesome but i m happy with my decision to go there!

hey i read above that you interviewed at the Peoria campus...i'm interviewing there next week and wanted to know how it went? it is a panel interview? how were the questions? i also think my chances at this point are close to 0 for getting the chicago campus =(

3 interviewers all at once, take turns asking questions. Non-stressful questions. Not particularly hard questions either. Most of mine were open ended, general questions. Why medicine? What fields? What do you do for fun? about 30 minutes total. They promote Peoria campus and have little info on the others. Interviews are closed file, except they'll have your essays that you wrote.

Julius Erving summed it up really well! I would be aware of the extent to which they promote Peoria though, i was totally shocked at how much pride they had there. I mean when u see the skool, u think its really not that great at all, but the students seem to be happy and the program they say is comparable to the Chicago one. Although getting chicago campus straight up now might be a little bleak, you can always send in a letter and after the May 15 decision date, lots of spots open up and if ure argument is strong enuf, you'll be able to switch over. I heard people got switched as late as 1 week before orientation in the past! Also the panel is made of 2 faculty and 1 student. I would say direct one question to each of them...so that they all feel like ure interested. Honestly its a really quick afternoon, i got there and left in no time cuz i was one of the first interviews. It's much more laid back than i thought it would be.

Hey Luhando-

I found out yesterday I was placed at Chicago! Are you definitely going there next year?

Ya I am 100% sure I am going there next year. =) chicago is an awesome city...and the Bears are going to the Superbowl!!

Hey luhando, if you don't mind me asking what other schools did you get into? and what about UIC chicago in particular sold you? I'm still having a hard time deciding b/w schools. And yay for the bears. it's been too long! Now only if the cubbies can get some of that luck...

i got into most of the chicago schools and 1 wisconsin school. I did not apply to Northwestern or University of Chicago. UIC's stellar clinical curriculum and their reasonable tuition drew me to it immensely. I also love the clinical exposure that students gain in M1 and M2 via the LPC program and the free clinic volunteerings. I also have heard amazing things about its anatomy department being one of the best. Overall, I think that Ill become a really well rounded doctor going to uic. The patient diversity that u get at the chicago campus i think is probably unmatched! I love the city on top of it! I have gone to undergrad in the middle of nowhere and i really wanted to be in chicago for med school. Also its close to home for me and from the skools that are close to home, this one is the cheapest. And honestly i know at uic they do not spoon feed u which really makes u a much better student i think. These are the main reasons!

Great reasons!
I was kinda turned off at first by the "lack of spoon feeding" but your perspective makes it a positive thing. Do you know if there's any truth to the "sink/swim" mentality there? Are the faculty easily accessible?

Hey Guys...anyone know when UIC admissions is meeting to make decisions on late Dec./Jan Interviews?? I called last week and they would not confirm an exact date.

Thanks!

Does anyone know how we can find out if we've satisified the 1-year behavioral science requirement? I don't want to find out my classes dont qualify and its too late!

Do you know what is the acceptance rate at UIC? Thanks.

As far as the sink/swim mentality i believe that it could be true of any med skool. And of the people i have spoken with, at UIC faculty does not want u to fail...so they will help u as much as they can so long as ure willing to work hard and get the help u need. At any med skool you could potentially fail. I mean no one can become a doctor without putting in a lot of hard work. I have heard that faculty at uic is as accessible as anywhere else. I mean u just have to email or make appts. and professors are gonna be willing to talk and help you. Also, at uic, they really do promote group studying. A wonderful way to learn difficult material is to go over it with your peers. At least personally, that works really well for me. It not only helps u gain a good understanding of the material but also helps u build good relationships. And the fact that uic does not spoon feed definetly makes u a more independent student. Overall, most people choose uic because its a good school, located in the city, at a good cost. Basically, it wont be flashy but it's gonna get the job done...and get it done well just because the education there is really good. Hope that answers ure questions.

The acceptance rate at UIC:
They interview 800 applicants of which 600 are accepted. These are approximate numbers.

Does anyone know if there's a second look weekend scheduled or anything of that sort?? I'm having a tough time making my decision. I feel like I need another look to see if UIC is going to be worth the OOS tuition.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself to the group...received my acceptance a few days ago. I'm just about 100% sure that I will be matriculating at UIC--the question is now which campus.

I pref'ed chicago and included a letter (nothing profound, but all the family is in the area including many in the city, spend 1/2 my life living in the city before moving to the near suburbs, spending the summer here in 2005 working and taking courses at loyola) so I'm hoping for that at this point. Otherwise, I think i'll be heading to peoria. Either way--and i made it clear in the letter--the assignment will in no way affect my decision. I see the benefits of both locales, and of course its in-state tuition regardless....

Have a great night everyone!

Does anyone know if they will answer our questions about our preference of site over the phone? I'd rather not call if I'm just going to annoy them.

How quickly did everyone hear about their site assignment?

They refused to answer anything about site assignment over the fone for me, but in previous years, it looks like they have done it. For me, they took about a week to get back to me bout the site i was assigned to. But I live really close to UIC, so that might be why.

Recently received my assignment for the Chicago campus. Probably the most nerve-wracking letter I've opened so far.

Thinking UIC will be the one for me; recently interviewed at Pritzker, but I got a much better vibe from UIC, the people I interviewed alongside were much more my type of people (should prob go back to both schools to check this out more) but for now that vibe + the relative unimportance of medical school reputation + 40-50k more left in my pocket = UIC baby.

Although I'm sure if I get into Pritzker my reasoning skills are going to break down and I'll have to wrestle with what school to go to.

Kurz, have you heard anything yet?

Just got my letter today.....

CHICAGO baby!

Hey whats up guys, i'm a first year at UIC and i was in your boat last year and congratulations on your acceptance. If you need any info about the courses, professors, living arrangments, just feel free to write back.

hi bushwt!
Ok...so I have a few questions. So is there a 2nd look weekend? And if there is, is it worth it to go? I am already 100% sure I am gonna go to UIC Chicago...so what do you think? Would it be good to meet people through it? Also, is there like a website or anything to look at to get to fellow classmates?

And, as of now I think I wanna live at MD City Apartments. How like safe is it? I know its super close to campus, so it seems like an awesome option.
Thanks!!

I went last year to the 2nd look week and it was all right, no big deal. You just meet with the deans talk about the curriculum, meet some people but than again you'll really meet them in the fall. Well MD city apartments are nice, i heard mixed feelings about them. Their really convenient because it's really close to school, but than again their pretty overpriced. It's a big city so you'll need to watch out when you walk at night so it's not that bad, the area has been going through a lot of rennovations so it's been pretty up an coming though. It's really convient to live close by the first year.

as far as of websites this is prob the best bet, as you'll get your own website come fall. but you'll have chance to meet everyone in orientation.

I feel like this is the least chatty forum for class threads! =) Is no one else as enthusiastic as me to Go to UIC COM? awww...

hi guys, i'm also an M1 at UIC. congratulations on your choice. there's a lot of diversity at UIC, on all fronts, so if you're looking for group-study you'll find it. alternatively, if you want to be a loner, you could do that too. pm me if you want more details or advice...especially if you're a wary humanities major who only took the core pre-reqs to get in. i guess i'll go...mid-terms are upon us. 😱

Just got my acceptance...does anyone know if the Chicago campus is full yet? I've never seen that campus...is it very crowded/unsafe/etc? I've also heard its a bit competitive for rotations and stuff because there's so many students there. Any opinions? THanks!

hey good luck on neuro and anatomy only a few days to go!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone!

I was just accepted to UIC and definitely going to attend! I am REALLY excited-- I absolutely love the school! I am coming from Southern California. Any other OOSers? I can't wait to meet you all!

Mario-

Tell us what you're lovin about uic... 😎

Hey everyone. I am going to be attending the UIC COM Chicago Campus. The sooner we get to know each other, the more fun our next 4 years are going to be. I started a facebook group called "UIC College of Medicine Class of 2011" Anyone who is going to UIC next year should join up. I will be living in the city this summer, and would love to hang out with my future classmates sometime, next year is going to be amazing.

I second the "join the facebook" call--its a much more efficient way of meeting everyone!

Yes, I love UIC because it's clinical training is very strong and it's in the heart of the medical district! It's diverse and the school is really focused on doctors who want to work in underserved areas. I think that's so cool.
