UIC housing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not going to live in the SSR. I couldn't imagine living in the dorms again. I've started looking a litttle further north and have found some descent places. Are you from chicago??

i'm from the west suburbs of chicago but am not really familiar with the city.

SSR is not really a dorm. well sort of... it does have kitchens in each unit.

i know nothing about rent prices in the city. what places "further north" do you recommend? it'd be nice not to have to commute too far, especially with chicago's nasty winters.

I wouldn't suggest living at SSR next year. Its kind of ghetto and is connected to 2 other freshman dorms. You could get an apartment for the same amount. I work there as student security and in my opinion-it sucks.

Hey shizzle,

what do you think about bucktown/wicker park? Also, where can I look for housing around the school?

I live in the goldcoast and had plan to continue living there if I went to UIC. Bucktown/Wicker Park are nice and convienent to the school (via the Blue Line train). Personally, I like the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, Lakeview areas a little better, and I think it's safer.

Bucktown and Wicker park are nice spots to be and aren't too far. From the dental students I've talked to though they said that living within walking distance is a big advantage. If you don't know the area well try and talk to someone at the dental school to help you find something close. I'm most likely going to get a place near Laflin and Polk (about 2 blocks east from the dental school).

If your planning on renting in the city, check out Chicago Craiglist for places around West Loop. Our friend from Wicker park knows that Rents for 2Bd's run from $675 (okay) to $1300-$1800 (Nice Loft + some have parking). A friend of mine who goes to UIC has a place right across the Eisenhower Xprsswy (west loop) with a private parking space. His is a 2 bd, $1500 a month. If you have never lived downtown make sure you get to know the areas you want to live.

Go to google.com and type in Chicago craiglist, you will get tons of listings. If your planning on buying, well hopefully your well off or the p's are picking up that tab. A 1 bdroom condo will run you $165,000 - 200,000 in the vicinity w/out parking most of the times.

Here is an example in West Loop --$1500
Beautiful large 2Br loft, hardwood floors, large bath with dual sink/ soaking tub, in unit washer/dryer, kitchen with island and all appliances, fireplace, balcony, heated secure garage parking spot included, close to I-290, I-55 & 90/94,bus stop right outside, El 3 blocks away, beautiful view overlooking neighborhood park, available Feburary 1st 2004-June 30, 2004 with option to extend lease. Pictures available upon request.

Obviously this is expensive for some, but hey that's what loans are for! Roommate with someone and reduce the rent.

Bill E.
