I tried to resist posting this thread, but the impending deadline got to me. Would appreciate any insight on the reputation of these programs (in general and in retina, if possible).

University of Illinois at Chicago vs. Columbia
Currently have Columbia ranked higher than UIC.
-Surgical volume seems comparable (120-140 cataracts), though Columbia is adding another resident spot and starting to cover another hospital.
-Both seem to have great reputations in retina.
-I like Chicago more than NYC
-Both have good didactics, though Columbia's basic science course seems hard to beat
-Both programs encourage research, but UIC has a financial incentive to publish.
-Concerns about declining national reputation at UIC? However, seems to have some very famous faculty (e.g. Mieler).

Northwestern vs. Vanderbilt
Currently have NW above Vanderbilt.
-Both have good research opportunities.
-Both have mediocre surgical volume. In particular, Vanderbilt seems to have heavier call and night float, but yet still only ~120 cataracts. NW has an elective in India for cataract surgical experience.
-I like Chicago, but Nashville also seems like a decent place to live (especially after factoring in weather).
-I think I would fit in more with Vanderbilt's current residents...but most of these people are going to be gone by the time I get there.
-Vanderbilt's PD is completely dedicated to resident teaching.

just wondering how Northwestern came out above Vandy based on your list because just reading it blindly seems to favor Vandy more, this is not based on any recommendations on one program vs. the other, but just the feel I got from your list

NW>Vanderbilt. Nashville has unbearably hot and humid summers, no bodies of water, no urban center, and no tapas restaurants. Vanderbilt is going through financial problems (recently published by wsj).
