Hi,

I'm trying to figure which psychiatry residency to rank first, that is, UIC vs. Wash.U. I'm interested in public sector psychiatry and thought UIC would be a better option for me. However, the training at Wash.U. is superb and may be I might change my mind and want to do some research but still have the option of working in the public sector. I don't want to pigeon hole myself into one specific area. I liked both Wash.U. and UIC. The residents were laid back and seemed quite happy. I also thought the didactics are superb at both institutions. However, I realize the biological emphasis at Wash.U. whereas UIC has a more broad-based emphasis. I think I would be happy at either one and cannot choose between one or the other.

I just wanted some feedback on what you all think about both institutions and where you would want to go between the two.

Thanks

Would you rather live in Chicago or St. Louis?
Where did residents seem happier?

Those are the real make or break questions.
You'll get fine training and graduate Board-eligible at either place.

I agree with OldPsychDoc. Location of the program is going to be very important and you should consider that, particular when comparing two excellent programs with good reputations. Of course, St. Louis and Chicago are very similar. Though, Chicago is bigger, more expensive.

One difference I've heard about both programs is that WashU probably tips the balance towards the biological philosophy more than UIC.

Good Luck...
