UK Student - When Should I Write Step 1?

So I'm most likely going to write Step 1 this summer....but need advice to confirm it.

I'm currently in 2nd year medicine in the UK (5 year program). First 2 years is basic medical sciences, last 3 years are clinical rotations.

Most of the material covered in 1st 2 years overlaps with Step 1. However, there is a bit more pharm and path we do in 3rd year that may help for Step 1 prep.

However, this summer I have 3 months to study, whereas next summer (after 3rd year), I have 1 month. I figure the extra 2 months is key, since most of Step 1 stuff is memory work, and this is why I have decided to write it this summer as opposed to next.

Would you agree with me?

You absolutely need Path. Pharm would help. I would take it before the clinical years.

Like I always say: if you're going to write the exam, you should do pretty well, since you did after all write it.

I do have some path background, and am planning on reading the Board Review Series (BRS) for Pathology next month. If I read that book, will that suffice for step 1?

BRS path is meant to be more of a review than a primary source. Personally, I don't think BRS path has enough of the fine-point detail or context to be a good review guide (MANY people disagree with me here). Definitely not enough to teach you path for step I.

Take a look at the questions posed in this thread, if you feel confident with them. Go ahead and get a QBank (Kaplan or USMLEWorld). If you're doing well with one of those, then go ahead and take Step I.

So what book do you reccomend as a primary source...Robbins Pathology? Any others?

Other quick questions, if I do sign up for Step 1 for Aug, and realize I'm not ready in July, can I pull out and get a refund? Or am I stuck with the $700 debt?

Which med school do you go to? Uk ones vary quite a lot in terms of path (among other things).

Hey, Im reading the BRS right now, and it appears that we have some Path, lol. So maybe Im not so screwed.....but still gonna be a long few months coming up.

Can anyone reccommend any good Pathology books to read? I heard that BRS is perhaps not sufficient for Step 1...true? I have Robbins, but the book is massive...do I really need to know all of Robbins Path for Step 1?
