Hey guys,

Does anyone know how you go about using a UK medschool degree in the US/Canada? I know the details of going from the US to the UK, but am finding it hard to find out the other way.

I've been accepted onto a UK degree (as a UK student anyway) but want to ideally move to Canada in the long term, and want to know if this is feasible!

Thanks for any help at all!

A move to Canada would be very difficult. Even Canadian students who study abroad find it very difficult to find work in Canada after their medical degrees. You must sit a series of exams similar to the USMLE. If you pass these two exams you will be invited to take an OSCE. If you pass that...you have a shot at a job in Canada. However, there are very limited positions in specialties other than general practice. So, if you have your heart set on another specialty...Canada is not your place.

Many Canadian students who studied abroad would do their residencies in the US and then try to get back to Canada.

Another option would be to do your postgrad training in the UK and apply to the RCPSC to be allowed to sit the Canadian exams for your specialty when you've finished. Even though UK specialty training would take longer, the UK also provides its medical postgrads with better compensation.

The RCPSC is changing its procedure for recognizing postgrad training from other countries and there's no guarantee of what it will be like when you finish your training. But I think it's likely to get better, not worse. (At the moment, the UK is one of only a handful of countries whose training can be used to apply to be exempted from Canadian postgrad training.) Check with the RCPSC for more info.

I don't really agree with the first reply you got... I am just finishing my MD, and I have worked with grads from as far away as Australia & Iran who are doing residency programs in Canada...

Usually they require one year in Canada to get all the tests out of the way, and can then enter the SECOND round of our matching system... These are the spots the Canadian grads didn't take in February...

These second rounds spots are less competetive specialties, although every once in a while Obstetrics & Gynecology, Gen Surg, Ortho and even Optho spots end up open!! But these will often be in areas of the country that people don't want to live due to remoteness (ie Newfoundland) or cost/poor academic program (ie Vancouver)...

It is not hard to snag a Family Med, Physiatry, Psych (getting harder) or Community Med spot...

There is talk of international med grads being allowed into the first round across the country, but I wouldn't hedge my bets...

Hope that helps.
