i'm trying to decide whether or not to apply to the mdphd program at u of maryland. initially, this was to be a sort of "safety" but i also heard that programs would reject applicants who look like they would go to higher ranked programs. my gpa is close to a 4.0 from hyp and my mcat is close to a 40, so i don't want to waste money...what do you think?

For what its worth I think they only matriculate ~4 students/year.

I applied to them as a safety when I applied and was quickly accepted with a bonus to the stipend for the first two years over the normal stipend if I attended. I turned them down as I got other acceptances. In retrospect it was a bit of a waste of time, but if it eases your mind I guess it's worth it...

It was probably my hardest interview. They do committee interviews and I feel like the committee there was particularly hardcore. I have a very relaxed and somewhat bold style, so it didn't phase me whatsoever, but if anything this would make a bad first interview for someone who's timid and wants to warm up IMO.

I had a similar situation as Neuronix did. However, I interviewed there last year and was not faced with the committee interview. They have since done away with this format. The interviews were very laid back and I was accepted very shortly after the interview. If you are looking for peace of mind, it might be a good idea.

Also if you are interested in ID or vaccine development, UMaryland is a great place for this type of research.
