Anybody have any thoughts on UMDNJ-Newark's reputation as a medical school. Any good for somebody wanting to eventually do a surgical residency in the NY/NJ area?

Thanks

Hi,
I'm on student council and participate in the new cirriculum steering committee.

According to USNEWS ranking, we are ranked right in the middle of 120 medical schools. To be frank with you, our ranking should go up considerably in the next few years. Why? Our new cirriculum will be the most up to date and streamlined since the entire system is being revamped this year. In addition, since USNEWS uses research funds as a big determinant on ranking, we're moving up the ladder since we just got a record amount of grants for research.

After looking at the residency match list, several people go onto surgical residencies around this area, so you should not have a problem.

A key to getting a good residency, especially in a competitive field, is to have research. Here at UMDNJ- Newark, we have a specific program that matches you up with a principal investigator. In addition, if you do not find something that you are interested in, the hospital is attached to the school, so going over there and approaching surgeons and asking them for shadowing/research projects is a cinch (I'm doing that myself)

SDN-

As a student there and on the curriculum committee, will it be P/F or not? I've heard that students/faculty support it but that residency directors in the area are not too keen on it. I'm curious because it seems as if there's a lot of work to be done in terms of details, but the new school year is only 6 months away. Also, what's your take on the humanism program? Any further detail would be appreciated.

SDN-helper, I too would like a response to this, and also the question I asked in the thread NJ Med vs. SLU.

To be honest, there is yet to be a definite YES or NO, however, judging from the polls and forums that i've attended, P/F seems to be the more popular choice.

I wouldn't be surpised if it was P/F next year for the incoming class.

oh, and about humanism? heck, i don't know if other schools are like this, but we go out of the way to make sure physicians from UMDNJ are well versed in the patient- doctor relationship, and it's not by textbook nor lecture, it's by actual practice!

I just had my class in Art of Medicine and History and Physical. These are required classes that are designed to teach students how to deal with patients with different backgrounds and in a humanistic matter. We even have lectures on how to use inturpreters.

The key to this program is that our group is only comprised of 6 medical students, 1 M.D. and 1 patient, so we have the opportunity to interact with the patiens. We are taught how to ask questions like, "Do you have sex with men, women, or both?" in a discreet way 😛, and after the 3 hour session, we give each other critiques.

What's more is that after our school also offerrs "SFHCC" or Clinic for first years. Patients in our area come in for free checkups. The only thing is that they have to be seen by medical students (Max 5 in a group). Of course, at the end of the examiniation, an attending comes in and checks over your work. The great thing is that you get to practice your skills you learn in class right off the bat. And it's ok if you screw up.. better now than during your rotations. 3rd and 4th years are also present with you to critique you.

Do we have the humanistic part of medicine covered? Yup.. i think so 🙂

SDN-Helper,

Thanks for your response. It was good insight. However, I was referring to the new grant sponsoring a program in humanism. There's a center being created, the exact name escapes me. Maybe you would know how the initiative is going to fit in, what additional opportunities will be available, etc.
