Wondering if anyone can help me out with this. I have to choose to interview at one of these places (they are on the same day). I've heard great things about UMDNJ except for the fact that it is in Newark. I don't know much about UNC, but their VA is pretty far away and I think they send residents to Minneapolis to increase surgical numbers, but it sounds like a nice location. Any thoughts would be really appreciated!

you will not go wrong w/ umdnj. As a recent grad ('08) I can attest to superb clinical/surgical training, great pathology & trauma. This is a benefit of being in Newark, & being the only residency in the state of NJ. Having no fellows means residents are pseudo-fellows for all subspecialties & thus have a great deal of responsibility & surgical/laser training. As to your concerns about newark: none of the residents live in newark... either NJ suburbs or nyc.
