UMDNJ versus Pitt

This is for a friend. She has a scholarship to UMDNJ. It be about 88,000-100,000 less debt than Pitt at the end of the 4 years (we figured in interest capitalization on unsub loans).

UMDNJ is also her state school and is not too far from her home. Pitt's allure is the prestige and curriculum design.

But she and I both don't know if Pitt is worth 100,000 more in debt.

What do you guys think? Any input will be very much appreciated.

Note: She has been given extra time by both schools to make a decision.

Simply put - if she wants to go into primary care, UMDNJ is the ticket...although rumors about about their being taken over by RWJ.

If she thinks she may want to specialize, she should spend the money on Pitt.

It's the choice I made!

Is there really any truth to that rumor? How would that affect current student's status, or certification?

Huh? I thought RWJ and NJMS were both part of UMDNJ. Do you mean RWJ is taking over NJMS? What would be the point of that? They'd both still be UMDNJ . . .

Pitt is really not that prestigious and the money aspect seems a no brainer if you ask me.

choisimd: From what I hear, there's a committee formed to decide whether or not to change the curriculum of NJMS to be that of RWJ. This committee's members are heavily weighted in favor of RWJ so it seems that this will come to pass. I can't imagine this will change certification and I have no idea how it would affect current students. My guess is, it would not affect the current curriculum but would start with incoming students. But it does seem like it would be chaotic for a few years until the dust settled. Some faculty would invariably leave in protest, infrastucture would have to change, etc. But since RWJ is perceived as the better school, it would make the system stronger in the long run and reduce costs which also makes for a stronger system.

Would I go to NJMS next year? No. In five years? More likely, but ask me then. :wink:

banannie: while they have a lot of the same finances (they share the financial aid office) the classes, curriculua, facilities, physicians, and hospitals are totally different. The educations are tied mostly by finances and little else. Thus the seperate rankings in US News.

This might be a different issue, but there is a commission appointed by the Governor of NJ to look into the future of UMDNJ. There's a chance it may get merged in part or all with Rutgers. Things will definitely be changing in the next few years, but I think for the better. RWJMS seems to be a great place with lots of new things springing up all the time. Plus they match pretty well if you look at the list.
